India To Achieve 20% Organic Farming

  • In the next 8 years, India can put 20 per cent area under Organic Farming.
  •  Prof Ramesh Chand, Member Niti Aayog and chairperson of the 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists said, that science should be used into natural and organic farming. He added that science may help in increasing the productivity in farming.

Global South Summit

  • India will host the third Voice of the Global South Summit on August 17, 2024. This virtual event will address major global issues like conflicts, development challenges, and climate change. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the summit, which will involve discussions with representatives from various countries.
  • The summit provides a platform for countries in the Global South—those in Latin America, Africa, and parts of Asia to share their views, difficulties, and priorities. Its goal is to improve communication and cooperation among developing nations.

  • First Summit (January 2023): “Unity of Voice, Unity of Purpose”
  • Second Summit (November 2023): “Together, for Everyone’s Growth, with Everyone’s Trust”

  • Ministerial sessions covered various topics like foreign affairs, education, finance, environment, energy, health, and trade.
  • Initiatives Announced : Global South Centre of Excellence (‘Dakshin’), Global South  Science and Technology Initiative, Global South Scholarship Programme, Cooperation in the health sector, Global South Young Diplomats Forum
  • The Global South Summit, which started in 2004 in Havana, Cuba, seeks to enhance cooperation among developing nations. It includes diverse cultures and economies and focuses on sustainable development, climate change, and social equality. The outcomes of these summits can influence UN policies and improve partnerships among member states, with rotating leadership to ensure inclusivity.

‘Nivahika’

  • National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) has taken a significant leap in data management with the launch of its cutting-edge web portal, ‘ Nivahika.’
  •  “The ministry often requests detailed reports and updates on our activities. With Nivahika, we now have a reliable tool that ensures accuracy and consistency, aiding in everything from ministry submissions to national rankings,” said Prof. Krishna.
  • He emphasized that Nivahika is not just a milestone for NITC but could also set a benchmark for other National Institutes of Technology (NITs) across the country once fully operational.

  • Nivahika becomes fully functional, it is poised to become a model for data management across the educational sector.
  • The development of Nivahika was overseen by the Dean (Planning & Development) office, with critical support from the Centre for Information Technology, Research and Automation (CITRA), the Computer Networking Centre (CNC), and the Central Computer Centre (CCC).
  • The portal is designed for the systematic and timely recording of key activities from various departments and multidisciplinary centers, ensuring that crucial data is accessible at all times.
  • “Nivahika will not only streamline the availability of institutional data but will also provide secure access to authorized personnel,” said Prof. Priya Chandran, Dean (Planning and Development). She further noted that the portal’s automated report generation capability marks a significant advancement in how the institute handles data.

Tata’s Semiconductor Unit In Assam

  • Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that the construction work for Tata’s semiconductor unit at Morigaon in Assam has begun.
  • Sharing more details about the plant in New Delhi, Mr Vaishnaw said that this unit will be set up with an investment of 27 thousand crore rupees and will generate 15 thousand direct and 11 to 13 thousand indirect jobs.

  • The Union Minister said that it will be a very big semiconductor plant, which will manufacture 4 crore 83 lakh semiconductor chips per day.
  • He added that the chips to be manufactured in this plant will be used in e-vehicles and the communication and network infrastructure.

  • This unit will be the site for development of indigenous advanced semiconductor packaging technologies including Wire Bond, flip chip and I-SIP (integrated system in package) technologies and all these three major technologies which will be deployed in this plant are being developed in India.

Shri Amit Shah ln Chandigarh

  • Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah launched the e-Sakshya, Nyaya Setu, Nyaya Shruti and e-Summon apps for the three new criminal laws in Chandigarh.
  • Three new laws brought in by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji – Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)- have the fragrance of Indianness and our ethos of justice.

  • Under e-Sakshya, all videography, photography and testimonies will be saved on the e-evidence server, which will also be available in the courts immediately.
  • Under the e-Summon, it will be sent electronically from the court to the police station and also to the person to whom the summons is to be sent. Police, Medical, Forensic, Prosecution and Prisons are interlinked together on the Nyaay Setu Dashboard, which will provide the police with all the information related to the investigation in just one click.

  • Through Nyaay Shruti, the court will be able to hear witnesses through video conferencing. This will save time and money and also settle the cases faster. In another two months, Chandigarh will become the first administrative unit of the country to have 100% implementation of the three laws.

“VIRAASAT”

  • VIRAASAT”, a fortnight long exhibition dedicated to celebrating 10th National Handloom Day began at Handloom Haat in Janpath.
  • National Handloom Development Corporation Ltd (NHDC) is organising the handloom expo under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India which will conclude on 16th August, 2024.

  • It also provides market connect to the handloom weavers and artisans. During the event, several activities will be organised at the Handloom Haat like 75 stalls for handloom weavers and artisan to directly retail the products, Curated theme display of exquisite handloom of India, Workshops on natural dyes, kasturi cotton, design and exports, Live loom demonstration, Folk dances of India, Delicious regional cuisines etc.

  • Prime Minister during Mann ki Baat (112th episode) urged to upload photos with local products on social media with the hashtag ‘#MyProductMyPride’.
  • Swadeshi Movement which was launched on 7th August, 1905 had encouraged indigenous industries and in particular handloom weavers.  In 2015, the Government of India decided to commemorate the 7th of August every year as the National Handloom Day.
