Paris Olympics
- At the Paris Olympics, Indian Hockey team clinched the bronze medal, defeating Spain 2-1. The Men in Blue have repeated history from the Tokyo Olympics where the team also bagged a bronze. This is the first time India has won back-to-back medals since 1972.
- Harmanpreet Singh scored a brace after India was behind in the contest to claim the win as they got their record-extending 13th hockey medal at the Olympics.
- The team also gave its goalkeeper Sreejesh the perfect farewell by securing this Olympic medal.
- Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Olympic champion, put on an impressive display at the Paris Olympics, winning the silver medal in the men’s javelin throw event.
- Chopra’s season-best throw of 89.45m earned him the runner-up position, but he was unable to defend his title, as Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem broke the Olympic record with a stunning throw of 92.97m.
CAVA Women’s Volleyball Nations League
- India lifted the CAVA Women’s Volleyball Nations League final after beating hosts Nepal 3-2 at the Dashrath Stadium in Kathmandu.
- This victory marked India’s second title in the CAVA Women’s Volleyball Nations League. Despite losing to Nepal once in the league stage, India managed to secure the championship in the finals.
- The final match showcased the high level of competition and skill between the two teams. India clinched Gold, Nepal secured the silver medal and Iran settled with bronze in the tournament.
India And New Zealand
- President Droupadi Murmu held bilateral talks with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Vinston Peters at Government House in Wellington.
- Discussions were held on wide range issues including customs co-operation, traditional medicine and renewable energy.
- Our correspondent covering the visit reports that the bilateral engagements between President Droupadi Murmu and leaders of New Zealand ended on positive note. India and New Zealand inked the bilateral customs cooperation arrangement which is expected to ease trade between the two countries.
- New Zealand also ratified the International Solar Alliance paving way for enhanced opportunities for joint research and development in this field.
- Both the countries also agreed to exchange the best practices in the field of traditional medicine through the Global Centre for traditional medicine in Jamnagar. India and New Zealand acknowledged the progress in bilateral relations and deliberated upon ways of exchanging cooperation in several areas.
Earth Observation Satellite
- Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO will celebrate this Independence Day in space by launching an Earth Observation Satellite into orbit.
- The Small Satellite Launch Vehicle will be used to launch the satellite on August 15th at 9.17 am from Sriharikota. The Small launch vehicle developed by ISRO can be produced at low cost, has low turnaround time, can accommodate multiple micro satellites and can be launched on demand in less time with minimal infrastructure requirements.
- It can carry a 500 kg satellite to a 500 kms orbit. Once the demonstration flight is successful, it will be transferred to the private sector for production.
Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar
- Government has announced the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar, one of the highest recognitions in the fields of science, technology, and innovation in India.
- The objective of the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar is to recognize the notable and inspiring contributions made by scientists, technologists, and innovators, either individually or in teams, across various fields of science, technology, and technology-led innovation.
- ISRO-Chandrayaan 3 Team will be awarded the Vigyan Team Award for their contributions to space science and technology.
- Former Director of the Indian Institute of Science, Professor G. Padmanabhan, has been selected for the Vigyan Ratna Award in biological sciences.
- The Vigyan Ratna Award recognizes lifetime achievements and contributions in any field of science and technology. Anandharamakrishnan C, Umesh Varshney, Bhim Singh, Adimurthi Adi, Syed Wajh Ahmad Naqvi, Sanjay Behari, and Rahul Mukherjee are among those selected for the Vigyan Shri Award.
- The awardees nominated for the Vigyan Yuva Award include Dr. Bappi Paul, Dr. Abhilash, Radha Krishnan Mahalakshmi, Purabi Saikia, Digendranath Swain, Prabhu Rajagopal, and Prashant Kumar. The award ceremony for all categories will be held on 23rd of this month, in conjunction with National Space Day.
Broadcast Services Bill 2024
- Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has prepared the draft Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill, 2024 which will replace the Television Network Act of 1995.
- According to reports the act will classify influencers or social media pages who make content or write about current affairs or any other news online as ‘digital news broadcaster’.
- The definition of digital news broadcasters to include publishers of news and current affairs content. This means any person who broadcasts such programmes through an online paper, news portal, website, social media intermediary, etc., as part of a systematic business, professional or commercial activity. However, this excludes replica e-papers. Centre also aims to regulate OTT platforms under this new bill.
- However, the revised draft no longer mentions the streaming platforms as a part of the definition of ‘internet broadcasting services’. The OTT platforms are now referred to as a ‘publisher of online curated content’ to bring them in line with IT Rules 2021.
Drought In Zimbabwe
- United Nation has said more than half of the harvest in Zimbabwe has been destroyed due to a historic drought with around 7.6 million people now at risk of acute hunger.
- Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, said, the food security situation in the country is deteriorating rapidly following the drought caused by El Nino.
- The drought has strained Zimbabwe’s economy, with more than one fifth of school-aged children now out of school, and has led to critical water shortages. UN Assistant Secretary-General and Climate Crisis Coordinator Reena Ghelani, and Assistant Executive Director of the World Food Programme Valerie Guarnieri called for more international support after recently concluding a week-long mission to assess the impact of the drought in the country.
State of Emergency in Kursk Region
- In Russia, a state of emergency has been declared in the Kursk region as a rare cross-border attack by Ukrainian troops continued.
- Russian officials stated that at least five civilians have been killed and 31 wounded, including six children, since the start of the incursion. The acting regional governor, Alexei Smirnov, said the move was necessary to address the consequences of rival forces entering the region.
- Moscow reported that up to 1,000 Ukrainian troops, along with 11 tanks and more than 20 armoured combat vehicles, entered Russia near the town of Sudzha.
- According to media reports, fighting reportedly took place in several villages throughout Tuesday, and multiple air alerts were issued in Kursk. Thousands of people were evacuated from border areas.
- The local authorities urged residents to limit their movements, and all public events were cancelled. Meanwhile, Ukraine has not officially commented, and the extent of the incursion remains unclear.
China To Launch Satellite Constellation
- China is close to launching its first batch of satellites for a mega constellation aimed at rivaling US company SpaceX’s Starlink Internet network.
- As reported by Xinhua, state-run Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology (SSST) launched the first components on the network. SSST’s constellation has been named “Thousand Sails.”
- The project, also known as the G60 Constellation, was set up last year to establish a Chinese-based global low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite Internet network competitor to Starlink.
- Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, has a broadband constellation of around 5,500 satellites, used by consumers, companies, and government agencies.
