Tahawwur Rana

  • National Investigation Agency (NIA) formally arrested Tahawwur Hussain Rana, the key conspirator in the deadly 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, immediately after he arrived in New Delhi evening, following his successful extradition from the United States.
image 321
  • Rana was escorted to New Delhi by teams of NSG and NIA, comprising senior officials, on a special plane from Los Angeles. The NIA investigation team at the airport arrested Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin living primarily in Chicago, soon after he emerged from the airplane after completing all the necessary legal formalities.
  • He was taken for medical examination and produced before a special NIA Judge in Patiala House Court, during which the NIA sought his 20-day custody. However, the court sent Rana to the National Investigation Agency’s 18-day custody.
  • Rana is accused of conspiring with David Coleman Headley alias Daood Gilani and operatives of designated terrorist organisations Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami (HUJI), along with other Pakistan-based co-conspirators, to carry out the devastating terror attacks in Mumbai in 2008.
image 322
  • A total of 166 persons were killed and over 238 injured in the deadly attacks. Both LeT and HUJI have been declared as terrorist organisations by the Government of India under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. Central government has appointed Narender Mann, Advocate, as special public prosecutor for conducting trial and other matters in 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana case.

US Announces 90- Day Tariff Pause

  • US President Donald Trump has announced a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs for all but China. In a social media post last night, Mr. Trump said the 90-day breather will apply to reciprocal and 10 per cent tariffs. The US President said he was authorizing a 90-day pause as part of his tariff plan but was also raising the tariff rate for China to 125 per cent, effective immediately.
  • Mr. Trump said, based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, he was raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America. Mr. Trump gave respite to the 75 other nations that he had imposed discounted reciprocal tariffs on last week, saying that he has ordered an immediate pause on such levies after seeing a humble and proactive approach by these nations in trying to resolve the trade imbalance with the United States.

  • China retaliated with an 84 percent tariff on all goods imported from the US, which came into effect from midnight last night. China said it is raising its retaliatory tariff on the US to 84 percent, up from 34 percent. Beijing accused Washington of bullying practices. It alleged that the White House has damaged the global trade order.
  • The European Union also voted in favor of imposing tariffs on some US-imported goods. EU member states had approved 25 percent tariffs on various American products in retaliation for the US imposing similar tariffs on EU steel and aluminum imports.

India-Nepal

  • On the sidelines of the 3rd BIMSTEC Agriculture Ministerial level meeting on Wednesday, India’s Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and Union Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Development of Nepal, Ram Nath Adhikari, signed an MoU on ‘Cooperation in the Field of Agriculture between India and Nepal’
image 325
  • The ministers reviewed bilateral cooperation in the field of agriculture and discussed ways to further enhance collaboration for mutual benefit. This agreement aims to strengthen the ongoing collaboration between the two nations, particularly in areas such as enhancing crop productivity, improving post-harvest management and agri-marketing systems, and promoting climate resilience and sustainable agricultural practices.
  • The MoU reflects the shared commitment of both countries to ensure food security, uplift farmer livelihoods and work towards environmentally sustainable agriculture. The agreement will give a fresh impetus to the ongoing cooperation, especially in areas such as improving crop productivity, post-harvest management and marketing.

Death Sentences And Executions 2024” Report

  • Amnesty International recently released the “Death Sentences and Executions 2024” Report. According to the report, in 2024, the number of recorded executions worldwide surged to 1,518, the highest figure in nearly a decade. It revealed an increase in executions primarily in Iran, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia. These countries accounted for an alarming 91% of known executions.
image 327
  • This rise reflects a troubling trend of using capital punishment to suppress dissent and punish minorities. In 2024, the global execution tally reached 1,518, marking a 32% increase from 2023. This rise is the highest since 2015. Iran executed at least 972 individuals, while Saudi Arabia’s numbers rose to at least 345. Iraq saw a dramatic increase, with executions jumping from 16 to at least 63.
  • The overall figures exclude thousands believed to have been executed in China, North Korea, and Vietnam. Amnesty International reports that the death penalty is increasingly weaponised against protesters and minority groups.
image 328
  • In Iran, the government used executions to punish participants of the Women, Life, Freedom protests. This included executing individuals with mental disabilities. Saudi Arabia targeted its Shiite minority, executing those involved in anti-government protests under terrorism charges. Over 40% of all global executions in 2024 were linked to drug-related offences. Amnesty International argues that such executions violate international humanitarian law, which restricts the death penalty to the most serious crimes.
  • Countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore continue to impose death sentences for drug crimes, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations. Despite the rise in executions, the number of countries carrying out capital punishment remains low.
  • Only 15 countries executed individuals in 2024, the lowest on record. Meanwhile, 145 nations have abolished the death penalty in law or practice. Zimbabwe recently abolished the death penalty for ordinary crimes, and the UN General Assembly continues to advocate for a moratorium on its use.

Niveshak Didi Initiative

  • Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority (IEPFA) and India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) launched Phase 2 of the “Niveshak Didi” initiative. This collaboration focuses on increasing financial literacy among women in rural and underserved areas.
  • The initiative aims to empower women through education and community involvement. Niveshak Didi was introduced to address financial literacy gaps in India. It trains women postal workers and community leaders to become financial educators. The first phase saw over 55,000 participants, primarily women. Approximately 60% of attendees were from rural areas, denoting the initiative’s grassroots impact.
image 329
  • Phase 2 aims to expand the initiative. It plans to conduct over 4,000 financial literacy camps across India. Nearly 40,000 trained women postal workers will lead these camps.
  •  Topics include responsible investing, fraud awareness, savings habits, and digital banking tools.
  • IPPB plays important role in the initiative. It aims to provide accessible banking to all citizens. The bank leverages a vast postal network to reach underserved populations. This partnership enhances trust and promotes financial discipline in local communities.
image 330
  • Financial literacy is vital for economic empowerment. It helps individuals manage their finances effectively. The initiative addresses the needs of those with limited access to financial education. By educating women, the programme encourages a financially aware society.
  • The Niveshak Didi initiative is transforming rural communities. Educated women become community influencers. They share knowledge and inspire others to adopt sound financial practices. This ripple effect can lead to broader economic improvements.
