Ministry Of Railways

  • Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved eight projects of Ministry of Railways with a total estimated cost of 24 thousand 657 crore rupees. Briefing media in New Delhi after the meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, the projects cover 14 districts in Seven States.

  • The States are Odisha, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Telangana and West Bengal. He said, aspirational districts and tribal areas will get a major push of development through these projects.
  • The projects include Gunupur-Therubali New Railway Line route and Junagarh-Nabrangpur line in Odisha, Malkangiri-Pandurangapuram line in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and Buramara-Chakulia rail route in Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha. The Minister said that Bikramshila-Katareah rail route is related to Bihar while Jalna-Jalgaon project in Maharashtra will provide rail connectivity to Ajanta Caves, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

  • These are essential routes for transportation of commodities such as agricultural products, fertilizer, coal, iron ore, steel and cement.
  • The capacity augmentation works will result in additional freight traffic of a magnitude of 143 Million Tonnes Per Annum. Railways being environment-friendly and energy-efficient modes of transportation, will help both in achieving climate goals and minimizing logistics costs of the country.

Prez Murmu State Visit To Timor Leste

  • President Droupadi Murmu has embarked on a state visit to Timor-Leste after a successful two-day visit to New Zealand. President Murmu will reach Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste.

  • She will hold bilateral meetings with the President and the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste.
  • Earlier, in her address to the Indian diaspora in Auckland, New Zealand, President Murmu said that India has become an example of vibrant democracy in the world and is going to be the third largest economy very soon. She commended the Indian diaspora for upholding Indian festivals, traditions and customs.

EAM S Jaishankar Reaches Maldives

  • External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar arrived in the Maldives for a three-day visit. He was received by his Maldivian counterpart, Moosa Zameer, at the airport.
  • Dr. Jaishankar said that the Maldives occupies an important place in India’s vision of ‘Neighbourhood First’ and ‘SAGAR’.
  • The visit aims to strengthen the close partnership between the two countries and explore avenues to further enhance the bilateral relationship.

Committee On Indo Bangladesh Border

  • Central Government has constituted a committee to monitor the current situation on the Indo-Bangladesh border.
  • The committee will maintain communication channels with their counterpart authorities in Bangladesh to ensure the safety of Indian nationals and people belonging to minority communities in Bangladesh.

  • The committee will be headed by the ADG of the Border Security Force (BSF), Eastern Command, and will include the IG of BSF Frontier Headquarters South Bengal, the IG of BSF Frontier Headquarters Tripura, the Member of Planning and Development from the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI), and the Secretary of LPAI as its members.

Grain ATM

  • Odisha government introduced the state’s first Grain ATM, a new technology designed to improve food distribution under the National Food Security Programme.
  • This machine is part of the central government’s Annapurti programme and was developed with help from the World Food Programme (WFP) to enhance food security in the region.
  • Grain ATMs are automated machines that provide food grains directly to people, aiming to reduce hunger. They are used in several countries, including India, and help people get essential food supplies more efficiently.

  • The machines minimize the need for human intervention, which helps cut down on corruption and ensures that food is distributed fairly.
  • Grain ATMs were first introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic and use technology to make food distribution smoother. Some even use biometric authentication for security and offer fortified grains to improve nutrition. The goal is to reduce food waste and improve the efficiency of the food supply chain.
  • Annapurti initiative is an important program started by the Government of India in 2021 to help people get healthy food. It aims to improve access to nutritious food for those in need.
  • The program uses technology to make food distribution more efficient and focuses on growing food locally to lessen reliance on outside sources.
  • It works with local farmers to help them grow more crops and includes education about good nutrition. The initiative also supports eco-friendly farming practices and aims to tackle hunger and malnutrition.

First State To Implement Disaster  Insurance

  • Nagaland has become the first state in India to start a disaster management  insurance scheme by signing an agreement with SBI General Insurance.
  • This new program called the Disaster Risk Transfer Parametric Insurance Solution (DRTPS), is designed to protect against natural disasters.

  • Parametric insurance works by giving predetermined payouts based on specific events, such as the strength of a natural disaster.
  • This means that after a disaster, financial support is given quickly without the need for detailed damage assessments. The main aim of the agreement is to protect Nagaland’s important infrastructure and reduce economic losses caused by natural calamities.

Har Ghar Tiranga 2024 Campaign

  • Har Ghar Tiranga 2024 campaign is a nationwide initiative aimed at fostering patriotism and national pride among Indians by encouraging the display of the national flag, the Tiranga, in every household.
  • This campaign started as a part of the broader Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, which was launched to commemorate India’s 75th year of independence.
  • The essence of Har Ghar Tiranga 2024 is to transform the relationship with the national flag from a formal to a personal one, allowing citizens to connect deeply with the symbol of their nation.

  • Under the Har Ghar Tiranga 2024 campaign, the citizens of India are invited to hoist the flag from August 9th to 15, 2024. They are further encouraged to post a selfie with ‘#HarGharTirangaOnceAgain’.
  • After submitting this selfie to the official website of the campaign, they can download the certificate of participation. The Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan highlights the importance of Tiranga as a representation of India’s unity in diversity.
