- AT Rakesh Gurung, Director at the Tourism Department in the Nepalese Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, the 54-year-old veteran climber reached the 8,849-metre peak at 7.25 a.m. local time.
- The expedition was organised by the Seven Summit Treks and had 20 climbers. They scaled Everest this morning, said Thani Guragain, a senior staff at the Seven Summit Treks.
Exhibition Titled ‘Swadesh’
- A unique exhibition titled ‘Swadesh’, showcasing the diverse and vibrant folk and tribal art traditions of India, was held in Dubai.
- Organised under the banner of Vidisha’s Creations, the event aimed to bring greater recognition to the lesser-known art forms from various regions of the country.
- The ‘Swadesh’ exhibition gave special focus to lesser-known art forms such as Manjula’s art and Gond art, which are often overshadowed by the more famous Mithila paintings.
- “Within a single State like Bihar, we have various rich artistic traditions like Tikuli art and Manjusha art, in addition to Mithila art,” said curator Vidisha Pandey.
- “However, many of these art forms remain relatively unknown to the wider public.” The exhibits featured a diverse array of folk and tribal artworks, including the vibrant Mithila paintings from Bihar, intricately designed Kolam artworks from Tamil Nadu, the striking Warli tribal art from Maharashtra, and the mythological narratives of Kerala’s renowned mural art tradition , the therapeutic Mandala artforms among others.
- In addition to the exhibition, the “Swadesh” event included interactive workshops allowing visitors to learn traditional techniques directly from master artisans and sales of the art.
R Praggnanandhaa
- In Chess, India’s R Praggnanandhaa scored yet another victory over world number one Magnus Carlsen of Norway to keep himself afloat even as Wei Yi of China stretched his lead to a massive 2.5 points in the Superbet rapid and blitz tournament.
- With nine rounds still to go in the blitz event, Wei Yi has amassed 20.5 points with seven wins on the first day of blitz. Ending the day with 7.5 out of a possible nine, Yi seems like a man possessed and is poised to win the first leg of the Grand Chess Tour.
- Carlsen, at 18, is a distant second at this point and the main reason behind that is Praggnanandhaa, who has been beating the world number one often these days in the faster version of the game.
- Praggnanandhaa, however, is far behind the leaders with 14.5 points which makes it literally a two-horse race for the title.
Aman Sehrawat
- Aman Sehrawat has become the first Indian male wrestler to secure a quota place for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
- Asian champion Sehrawat secured a Paris quota in the men’s 57kg freestyle category at the World Wrestling Olympic Qualifiers in Istanbul, Turkiye.
- Sehrawat beat Chongsong Han of Korea 12-2 in the semi-final for India’s sixth quota in wrestling for the 2024 Olympics. All of the previous five quotas were obtained by the Indian women wrestlers. The Istanbul meet is the final opportunity for wrestlers to obtain a quota for the upcoming Summer Games.
Sakina Khatun
- India’s Sakina Khatun clinched two bronze medals at the Para Powerlifting World Cup 2024 in Pattaya, Thailand on Saturday. She secured the medals in the Best Lift and Total Lift categories, with a formidable lift of 93 Kgs in the women’s up to 55 kg event.
- Despite her remarkable performance, she just fell shy of securing a spot for the Paralympic Games, this year.
- Earlier in the Men’s up to 65 Kg category, India’s Ashok Malik secured the gold medal with a personal best lift of 197 kg, while in the Men’s up to 49 kg category, Parmjeet Singh claimed the silver with a lift of 162 kg. - India’s star javelin thrower, Neeraj Chopra sealed a second-place finish in the Doha Diamond League 2024. With an unusual slow start, Chopra’s spear landed at 88.36 metre, just 2 cenitmetres short of event topper Jakub Vadlejch’s 88.38 metre. The windy conditions in Doha played an unfriendly part in Chopra’s attempt to win the second Doha season in a row. Fellow Asian Games medallist Kishore Jena, returned disappointed as he was eliminated at the halfway stage after a throw of 76.31 metre.
Nisha Dahiya
- In Women’s Wrestling, Nisha Dahiya has become the fifth Indian woman grappler to qualify for the Paris Olympics.
- She defeated Romania’s Alexandra Anghel in the 68kg category semifinals at the World Olympic Qualifiers in Istanbul Nisha, last year’s Asian Championships silver-medal winner beat Anghel 8-4 by points.
- However, India’s Greco-Roman grapplers bowed out in the preliminary rounds in all six weight categories. This will be the first time that five Indian women wrestlers will be competing in the Olympics.
