D. Gukesh Becomes Youngest World Chess Champion
- Indian Grandmaster Dommaraju Gukesh became the youngest chess champion in the world. Gukesh made history as he clinched 18th World Chess Championship defeating Ding Liren of China in the 14th and the final match of the FIDE World Chess Championship in Singapore.
- India’s 18-year-old prodigy capped his meteoric rise scoring 7.5 points while defending champion Ding got 6.5 points in the championship.
- In total 14 matches, Gukesh won three while Ding succeeded in two, rest nine matches were drawn. No man in history, even Carlsen, Kramnik and Kasparov was 18 when he became the world chess champion.
- Gukesh beat the record previously held by Garry Kasparov who got the crown at age of 22.
- Gukesh is the second world champion from India after Viswanathan Anand, who won the title four times. Viswanathan Anand congratulated Gukesh for his achievement.
No Fresh Suit To Be Registered – Places Of Worship Act
- Supreme Court ordered that no fresh suits would be registered under the Places of Worship Act in the country. It also ordered that in the pending cases, no final or effective orders would be passed till further orders of the Apex Court.
- A Special Bench headed by CJI Sajiv Khanna asked the Union government to file within four weeks its reply to the clutch of petitions challenging the validity of the 1991 Act, which prohibits the filing of a lawsuit to reclaim a place of worship or seek a change in its character from what prevailed on 15th August 1947.
- The Bench, also comprising Justices Sanjay Kumar and K. V. Viswanathan, appointed advocates Kanu Agarwal, Vishnu Shankar Jain and Ejaz Maqbool as nodal counsel to make compilations of pleadings on behalf of the Union, the petitioners and the parties supporting the Act.
- In March 2021, a Bench headed by then CJI S.A. Bobde sought the Centre’s response to the plea filed by advocate Ashwini Upadhyay, challenging the validity of certain provisions of the law.
Nepali Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel
- President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Honorary Rank of General of the Indian Army on Suprabal Janasewashree General Ashok Raj Sigdel at an Investiture Ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan today. Mr Sigdel who is the Chief of the Army Staff in Nepali Army was awarded for his military prowess and contribution to fostering Nepal’s long and friendly association with India.
World Ayurveda Congress And Arogya Expo 2024
- World Ayurveda Congress and Arogya Expo 2024 officially commenced at Dehradun in Uttarakhand today with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurating the event at the Parade Ground.
- Speaking at the opening, the Chief Minister highlighted its role in fostering collaboration and sharing knowledge within the field of Ayurveda. He expressed confidence that the event would serve as a pivotal platform for advancing research, development, and new discoveries in Ayurvedic practices.
- The Ayurveda Congress is set to be a landmark event, bringing together experts, researchers, and practitioners from across the globe to explore the synergies between ancient healing traditions and cutting-edge innovations in the healthcare industry.
- Biennial event is organised by the World Ayurveda Foundation (WAF), an initiative of Vijnana Bharati. The central theme for the WAC2024 is, “Digital Health: An Ayurveda Perspective,” will delve into the transformative potential of modern technologies in advancing Ayurveda.
- The event will also include in-depth discussions and knowledge sharing on leveraging cutting-edge digital tools and innovations to enhance healthcare delivery, redefine research, and integrate Ayurveda into the rapidly evolving global health landscape.
Gita Jayanti 2024
- Gita Jayanti 2024, Bhopal and Kurukshetra achieved remarkable milestones, making the event unforgettable in the annals of religious and cultural history. Bhopal set a Guinness World Record with over 5,000 Acharyas collectively reciting verses from the Bhagavad Gita, while Kurukshetra witnessed the participation of 1.5 crore people globally through a virtual platform.
- In Bhopal, over 5,000 Acharyas gathered at the Lal Parade Ground to recite ‘Karma Yog’ from Chapter 3 of the Bhagavad Gita. This mass recitation earned Madhya Pradesh a Guinness World Record.
- Chief Minister Mohan Yadav received the certificate on behalf of the state, expressing pride in this achievement. He highlighted the significance of spreading the teachings of the Gita globally and linked the spiritual event to social empowerment by transferring funds to the Ladli Behans welfare scheme. CM Yadav transferred ₹1,572 crore to over 1.28 crore Ladli Behans under a welfare scheme.
- In Kurukshetra, 18,000 children chanted the verses of the Gita, and the event was joined by 1.5 crore people worldwide via an online platform.
‘Green Steel Taxonomy For India’
- Union Minister of Steel and Heavy Industries H D Kumaraswamy unveiled the Taxonomy of Green Steel for India in New Delhi, in the presence of Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries, Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa Varma.
- On the ocassion, Mr. Kumaraswamy said that India is committed to decarbonise the steel sector in alignment with net-zero emission intensity target by 2070.
- Mr. Kumaraswamy expressed that the release of the Green Steel Taxonomy for India marks not only a significant milestone for Steel Ministry but also for our collective mission of transitioning toward a low-carbon economy.
- Green Steel” shall be defined in terms of percentage greenness of the steel, which is produced from the steel plant with CO2 equivalent emission intensity less than 2.2 tonnes of CO2e per tonne of finished steel (tfs).
- The greenness of the steel shall be expressed as a percentage, based on how much the steel plant’s emission intensity is lower compared to the 2.2 t-CO2e/tfs threshold.
- Based on the greenness, the Green steel shall be rated as follows:
- Five-star green-rated steel: Steel with emission intensity lower than 1.6 t-CO2e/tfs.
- Four-star green-rated steel: Steel with emission intensity between 1.6 and 2.0 t-CO2e/tfs.
- Three-star green-rated steel: Steel with emission intensity between 2.0 and 2.2 t-CO2e/tfs.
Cashless Treatment Scheme For Accident Victims
- Cashless treatment of accident victims’ scheme will be launched across the country soon. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari said said, the scheme prevailing in six states will be soon launched in UP and later in the rest of the country.
- The scheme enables the victims of the road accidents to avail cashless treatment of upto 1.5 lakh rupees in the hospitals. Expressing concern at the growing number of accidents on highways, the Minister requested the members to set up Accident Prevention Committees at every district to look into reasons leading to such road accidents.
- He informed that Uttar Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh account for the highest number of road accidents. Among the cities Delhi, Bengaluru and Jaipur have recorded the highest accidents.
- Saying that 30 per cent of the road accident victims die due to delay in early treatment, the minister said that cashless treatment scheme has saved 2100 lives in six states where the scheme is being implemented now.
India Backs UNGA Resolution
- India has joined 157 other nations in supporting a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution demanding an ‘immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in the war-torn Gaza Strip.
- The UNGA overwhelmingly approved two resolutions. The first resolution called for a ceasefire in Gaza and the other backing the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which Israel has sought to ban.
- The first resolution, demanding an immediate ceasefire, was passed with 158 votes in favour, nine, including the United States, Israel, Argentina, Czechia, Hungary, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, and Tonga, against, and 13 abstentions.
- The second resolution, supporting the mandate of UNRWA, received 159 votes in favour, nine against, and 11 abstentions. The resolutions follow two days of debate at the 193-member General Assembly, where speeches overwhelmingly highlighted the need to end the 14-month-long conflict between Israel and Hamas.
- Delegates also called for unhindered humanitarian access in Gaza to address the growing crisis.
- India has consistently condemned the 7th October attacks, calling them acts of terror, and has emphasised the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. At the same time, India has repeatedly stressed the need for a ceasefire, continued humanitarian aid, adherence to international humanitarian law, and a commitment to restraint, dialogue, and diplomacy.
- New Delhi has also voiced concerns about the escalating violence in West Asia, repeatedly urging all parties to exercise restraint and pursue peaceful resolution through dialogue.
- Although General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, they carry significant weight as a reflection of global opinion. This vote came after the United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution on 20th November that had also called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
