PM Modi To Visit Nigeria, Brazil And Guyana
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a three nation visit to Nigeria, Brazil and Guyana from 16th of this month. He will visit Nigeria at the invitation of Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, from 16th to 17th November.
- This will be the first visit by a Prime Minister of India to Nigeria in 17 years. During the visit, the Prime Minister will hold talks to review the strategic partnership between the two countries and discuss further avenues to enhance the bilateral relationship. He will also address a gathering of the Indian community in the west african nation.
- India and Nigeria have been strategic partners since 2007 with growing economic, energy and defence collaboration. More than 200 Indian companies have invested over 27 billion dollars in important sectors in Nigeria.
- India and Nigeria also share a strong development cooperation partnership.
- Prime Minister will travel to Rio De Janeiro in Brazil to attend the G20 Summit during 18th and 19th November. India is part of the G20 Troika along with Brazil and South Africa and has been actively contributing to the ongoing G20 Summit discussions.
- During the Summit, Prime Minister will put forward India’s positions on various issues of global importance and build on the outcomes from the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration and Voice of the Global South Summits which were hosted by India in the past two years.
- Mr Modi is expected to meet several leaders on the sidelines of the G20 Summit.
- Prime Minister Modi will undertake a state visit to Guyana from 19th to 21st November. The visit to Guyana will be the first by an Indian Prime Minister since 1968.
- Last year, President of Guyana, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali visited India as the Chief Guest at the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Indore and was also awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman.
- During the visit, Prime Minister will hold discussions with President Ali, meet other senior leaders of Guyana, address the Parliament of Guyana and address a gathering of the Indian diaspora.
- In Guyana’s Georgetown, Prime Minister will also participate in the Second CARICOM-India Summit and hold meetings with leaders of CARICOM member countries to further enhance India’s long-standing friendship with the region.
COP 29
- India will host side events in partnership with the United Nations (UN) and other multilateral organizations at the ongoing Climate Change Conference – COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
- The side events will be hosted in the respective pavilions, ensuring high-level participation and wider outreach.
- Sources in the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said India also has an office with thematic installations.
- Highlighting India’s ambitions, the sources said that COP 29 must uphold the principles and provisions of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement to prevent the imposition of undue obligations on developing nations.
- It added that COP 29 should ensure that climate finance is adequate, predictable, accessible, grant-based, low-interest, and long-term.
- On energy transition, the sources mentioned that COP 29 should ensure that it is just and achieved in a nationally determined manner.
- They added that COP 29 should be able to agree to a mechanism that uses market-based instruments to incentivize low-carbon development.
- Furthermore, the parties should establish clearer rules for global carbon markets that do not create unfair barriers to trade or development but instead address the technology and financing gaps for supporting developing nations. COP 29 will be held until the 22nd of this month.
Committee On Disaster Risk Reduction
- Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Dr P K Mishra said that the discussions on Sikkim glacial lake outburst flood disaster have brought to focus the enormity of the challenge. Delivering an address at the 4th Committee on Disaster Risk Reduction (CoDRR) Workshop on “Strategies for Glacial Lakes Outburst Flood (GLOF) Risk Reduction” in New Delhi.
- Dr Mishra underscored the urgent need for effective strategies to address risks associated with glacial lakes.
- Principal Secretary also reiterated Prime Minister Modi’s emphasis on ‘responding to not just disasters but building resilience measures’ and the importance of collaboration in addressing challenges like GLOF risks.
- Dr Mishra highlighted India’s engagement with international GLOF experts and said that such collaboration is vital to enhancing the nation’s understanding of response strategies.
- Dr Mishra also highlighted mitigating risks associated with glacial lakes and to ensure a safer future for communities.
India In Global Top 10 For Patents
- India has secured a spot in the global top 10 countries in Patents, Trademarks, and Industrial Designs in the World Intellectual Property Indicators 2024 report.
- The report reveals significant growth in patent, trademark, and industrial design applications across top economies.
- India continues to solidify its place as a global leader in the intellectual property, and IP landscape by showing substantial progress and marking new milestones in IP activity.
- Commerce and Industry Ministry said in a statement that India ranks sixth globally for patents with 64 thousand 480 applications, with resident filings accounting for over half of all submissions.
- The patent office also granted 149.4 per cent more patents in 2023 compared to the previous year, underlining the country’s fast-evolving IP ecosystem. The report indicates a steady rise of 36.4 per cent in India’s industrial design applications, which aligns with increasing emphasis on product design, manufacturing, and creative industries within India.
- The top three sectors-Textiles and Accessories, Tools and Machines, and Health and Cosmetics-made up almost half of all design filings.
India’s Solar PV Product Exports Surge
- India’s exports of solar photovoltaic (PV) products have surged 23 times to 2 billion US dollars in the last two years.
- A report by Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) and JMK Research & Analytics, says, the growth was made during the fiscal year 2022 to 2024.
- The report says this marks significant progress in India transitioning from a net importer to a net exporter of solar products.
- Among the factors listed for the increase are India being considered a viable option for the country’s “China Plus One” strategy, and domestic PV manufacturers looking to sell their products at a higher premium abroad.
- The report says the US has emerged as a key market for Indian solar PV exports with more than 97 per cent share in financial years 2023 and 2024.
- The report estimated that annual module production by Indian solar PV manufacturers will be 28 gigawatts in the financial year 2025 and 35 gigawatts in 2026.
Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award
- Veteran Australian filmmaker Phillip Noyce, renowned for his acclaimed works such as Clear and Present Danger, Salt, and Rabbit-Proof Fence, will be honored with the prestigious Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). The festival, which will be held in Goa from November 20-28, 2024, has Australia as its Country of Focus this year.
