Partition Horrors Remembrance Day

  • Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. It commemorates the victims and sufferings of people during the Partition of India in 1947. This day the nation pays homage to all of those who sacrificed their lives and suffered unimaginable pain during the partition in 1947.

  • In a fitting tribute to all those who lost their lives due to the partition of the nation and were displaced from their roots, In 2021, the Government had decided to observe 14th August every year as the day to commemorate their sacrifice.

Independence Day

  • India’s 79th Independence Day will be observed on August 15th to honor the country’s hard-fought independence from 200 years of British colonial control in 1947. The event is coming closer with each passing day. The significance of this day in Indian history is irreplaceable.
  • The event honors the sacrifices made by the freedom warriors who cleared the path for India’s independence and inspires a strong sense of pride and thankfulness among people across the nation.

  • Independence Day, which is celebrated nationwide with formal ceremonies and patriotic fervor, is acknowledged as a national holiday. The Prime Minister raises the national flag at Delhi’s Red Fort to start the day, and then he gives a speech to the country.

  • Inational government finally declared that the theme for the 79th Independence Day celebrations on August 15 would be “Naya Bharat.”
  • According to an official release, the subject represents India’s goal of creating a prosperous, safe, and independent country by 2047 as it advances the government’s Viksit Bharat vision.
  • To recognize 50 of Delhi’s best-performing Swachhta Karamcharis, the central government will invite them as special guests to the Independence Day ceremony at the famous Red Fort. As per the officials, each zonal office has been directed to submit the names of five sanitation workers from their respective areas, including two men and three women, together with their wives, to the Ministry of Defense.
  • The workers’ performance and contributions to keeping their zones hygienic and clean will determine the ultimate choice.

  • Delhi Environmental Management Services (DEMS) headquarters has been designated as the nodal body in charge of creating the invitee list. After more than two centuries of British colonial control, India finally woke up to the dawn of freedom on August 15, 1947.
  • In his famous midnight speech, Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, spoke poetically about the nation’s long-awaited “tryst with destiny,” which marked a turning point in history. When Nehru raised the tricolor for the first time that day, a new era for a country emerging from oppression into sovereignty started.
  • Since then, official celebrations of Independence Day have been held all around the nation. In honor of the great bravery and sacrifice made by the leaders and freedom fighters who influenced India’s war for independence, the current prime minister raises the national flag at Delhi’s Red Fort.

India Achieves Landmark Milestone Of 100 Gigawatt

  • India has achieved a landmark milestone of 100 Gigawatt of solar PV module manufacturing capacity listed under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), a remarkable leap from just 2.3 GW in 2014.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the efforts and labelled it as a milestone towards self-reliance. In a Social media post, the Prime Minister said it reflects India’s success in manufacturing capabilities and popularising clean energy. Highlighting this achievement, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi highlighted that his Ministry is building a robust, self-reliant solar manufacturing ecosystem.

  • Mr. Joshi said that this achievement strengthens India’s path towards Atmanirbhar Bharat and the target of 500 Gigawatt non-fossil capacity by 2030. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi attributed the achievement to Prime Minister Modi’s visionary leadership and transformative initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar Modules.
  • He emphasised that this growth strengthens India’s path toward achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to global decarbonization efforts. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy introduced the ALMM Order in 2019, with the first list enlisting 8.2 GW of capacity.

  • In just over four years, this capacity has surged more than twelvefold to 100 GW, driven by 100 manufacturers operating 123 manufacturing units, up from 21 in 2021. This growth reflects contributions from both established companies and new entrants, many adopting high-efficiency technologies and vertically integrated operations, creating a competitive landscape capable of meeting domestic and global demands.

Typhoon Podul

  • Typhoon Podul, the 11th typhoon of the year, made landfall in eastern Taiwan’s Taitung County, bringing severe storms to Hualien and Taitung cities. The local meteorological agency continued to issue both sea and land warnings for Podul.

  • The land warning covers 13 counties and cities while the sea warning applies to the waters off eastern Taiwan, the Bashi Channel, the Taiwan Strait and waters near Dongsha Island.
  • Due to the typhoon, railway services and flights were disrupted on the island, while many counties and cities suspended work and classes. The flood control headquarters in south China’s Guangdong Province raised its emergency typhoon response from Level III to Level II in anticipation of Typhoon

E3 Warn Iran of UN Sanctions

  • France, Germany, and the UK, collectively known as the E3, have once again threatened Iran with the reimposition of the snapback UN sanctions, unless the country resumes negotiations. As per the media reports, in a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the Security Council, the E3 foreign ministers reiterated their threats of reimposing international sanctions on Iran. They warned to impose sanctions under the tenets of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, unless Tehran resumes talks or asks for a deadline extension.

  • The letter bears the signatures of French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, Germany’s Johann Wadephul, and Britain’s David Lammy, and comes two months post the ceasefire between Israel and Iran, following their 12-day war. The Iranian mission to the UN did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbass Araghchi had dismissed the threats, stating that the E3 nations lacked both the capability and the authority, to reimpose said sanctions.

‘Animal Stem Cell Biobank’

  • Union Minister of State for Science & Technology Jitendra Singh inaugurated India’s first Animal Stem Cell Biobank at the National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB) under BRIC in Hyderabad, to store and preserve high-quality stem cells from various animal species.

  • The facility is a state-of-the-art centre aimed at advancing research in animal health, genetic preservation, and biodiversity conservation.
  • The Minister also launched five breakthrough animal health technologies developed by NIAB, including BruDIVA, a diagnostic test to differentiate between brucellosis-infected and vaccinated animals for better disease control.

International Astronomy Olympiad

  • The 18th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) began in Mumbai, hosted by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, with participation from 288 students representing 64 countries, including Ghana as an observer.

  • The 10-day event will feature diverse rounds such as theory, observation, sky map reading, data analysis, planetarium round, and team competitions, making it the largest IOAA ever held.
  • The Olympiad aims to unite young astronomy enthusiasts worldwide, encouraging academic collaboration, cultural exchange, and friendship, while following rigorous question-setting and evaluation processes.

Equator Prize 2025

  • Bibi Fatima Women’s Self-Help Group (SHG) from Teertha village in Karnataka’s Dharwad district won the prestigious Equator Initiative Award 2025. This United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) prize honours community-led nature-based solutions for sustainable development and climate resilience. The Bibi Fatima SHG is the only Indian winner among ten global recipients from nine countries.
  • The Equator Prize is awarded annually by UNDP to recognise Indigenous Peoples and local communities protecting biodiversity and promoting sustainable livelihoods. The 2025 theme focused on Women and Youth Leadership for Nature-Based Climate Action. Winners were selected from over 700 nominations across 103 countries.

  • Each winner receives USD 10,000 and global recognition, including participation in major UN events. Formed in 2018 by 15 women, the group now supports over 5,000 farmers in 30 villages. It promotes millet-based mixed cropping on rainfed farms using eco-friendly natural farming methods. The SHG manages community seed banks distributing free seeds to farmers. It runs a solar-powered millet processing unit producing value-added products like rotis and vermicelli. These efforts enhance food security, biodiversity conservation, and women’s economic empowerment.

  • The SHG works with organisations such as Sahaja Samruddha, Indian Institute of Millets Research, and CROPS4HD. Selco Foundation provided solar power for the processing unit. The group also partners with Devadhanya Farmer Producer Company to promote rural agribusinesses. This network strengthens climate-resilient farming and sustainable rural livelihoods. The other nine winners come from Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Indonesia, Kenya, Papua New Guinea, Peru, and Tanzania.
  • Their initiatives range from Indigenous craft cooperatives and rainforest conservation to marine ecosystem restoration and agrobiodiversity zones. Collectively, these projects protect ecosystems, support food sovereignty, and promote inclusive green economies. Women and youth leadership are central to these successes.
