Black Day 2026: Nation Remembers Pulwama Martyrs
February 14 is observed in India as Black Day, marking the anniversary of the 2019 Pulwama terror attack—one of the most devastating assaults on Indian security personnel. In 2026, the country pays tribute to the 40 brave soldiers of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) who lost their lives in the attack.
On February 14, 2019, a suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden vehicle into a convoy of CRPF personnel in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. The attack resulted in the deaths of 40 personnel and left many others injured. The tragedy led to nationwide grief, heightened diplomatic tensions, and significant military developments, deeply affecting India-Pakistan relations.
Black Day symbolizes collective mourning and remembrance. Across India, citizens observe moments of silence, organize candlelight vigils, and share tributes. Educational institutions and organizations conduct remembrance programs to honour the martyrs and express solidarity with their families. Even seven years later, the day reinforces conversations about national security, unity, and resilience against terrorism.
WHO Prequalifies New nOPV2 Vaccine
The World Health Organization (WHO) has granted prequalification to an additional novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2). This step enhances global preparedness to tackle outbreaks caused by circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2).
The nOPV2 vaccine has been specifically developed to combat type 2 poliovirus outbreaks in regions where immunization coverage is insufficient. Unlike earlier oral polio vaccines, the new formulation offers greater genetic stability, reducing the risk of mutation into more dangerous strains. It remains effective in interrupting virus transmission, has a shelf life of up to 24 months, and can be stored under standard refrigeration conditions.
India achieved polio-free certification in 2014, but sustained immunization efforts remain essential to prevent any resurgence of the disease.
India’s Leading Wool-Producing States in 2026
India continues to play a significant role in the global wool industry. The country ranks second in sheep population and ninth in wool production worldwide. With approximately 77.4 million sheep, the wool sector remains vital for rural employment, textile production, and carpet manufacturing.
In FY24, India’s wool output reached 33.69 million kilograms. Rajasthan emerged as the top producer, contributing nearly half of the national output. Punjab recorded the highest annual growth rate in wool production, followed by Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.
Indian wool is broadly categorized into three types:
- Carpet grade (around 85%)
- Apparel grade (about 5%)
- Coarser grade (around 10%)
The wool industry supports nearly 1.2 million individuals in the organized sector and provides employment to millions more in allied industries, including carpet weaving.

Tarique Rahman Poised to Lead Bangladesh
Bangladesh’s political landscape is undergoing a major transition, with Tarique Rahman emerging as the likely next Prime Minister following the 2026 general elections. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has declared a decisive electoral mandate.
Rahman returned to Bangladesh in December 2025 after spending more than 17 years in London. His political rise follows widespread protests in 2024 that led to the removal of long-time leader Sheikh Hasina.
At 60, Rahman is the eldest son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and former President Ziaur Rahman, who founded the BNP. His campaign focused on restoring democratic governance, institutional stability, and national reconciliation.
Mia Mottley Wins Historic Third Term
Mia Mottley has secured a third consecutive electoral victory in Barbados, marking a historic achievement. Her party, the Barbados Labour Party, captured all 30 seats in the House of Assembly for the third time.
The election outcome unseated opposition leader Ralph Thorne and solidified Mottley’s leadership. She now becomes only the second leader in the country’s history to serve more than two consecutive terms. International leaders, including Marco Rubio, congratulated her and expressed interest in strengthening cooperation on regional security, crime control, and drug trafficking prevention.
