PM Modi Returns Home After Two Nation Visit
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi has returned home after successfully concluding his two-nation visit to United States and France. Mr Modi arrived at the Palam Airport in New Delhi.
- Prime Minister Modi visited the United States at the invitation of President Donald Trump. This was the Prime Minister’s first visit to the US after the inauguration of President Trump for a second term.
- During a substantive and productive visit to the US, Prime Minister Modi held bilateral discussions with President Trump in Washington.
- These comprised discussions in a restricted format, and an extended discussion over dinner with larger delegations. The discussions covered the entire gamut of the relationship, ranging from strategic and security cooperation, defense, trade and economic engagement, technology, energy security, and people-to-people linkages, as well as regional and global issues of concern.
- The two leaders jointly launched the US-India COMPACT for the 21st century. This COMPACT stands for Catalyzing Opportunities in Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce, and Technology.
- In the area of trade and investment, the leaders launched Mission 500, aiming to more than double the total two-way trade to 500 billion dollars by 2030.
- Prime Minister Modi and President Trump also announced plans to negotiate the first tranche of a mutually beneficial multi-sector bilateral trade agreement by the fall of 2025 toward advancing this process.
- Defense remains a very important area of cooperation in the strategic partnership between the two countries. The leaders announced plans to finalize a new 10-year framework for the US-India major defense partnership in the 21st century.
- This is a framework that will run from 2025 to 2035 and is expected to be finalized later this year. They also agreed to move forward on ongoing defense procurement negotiations for a number of platforms, including land and air systems, as well as co-production agreements.
- During the first leg of his two-nation tour, Mr. Modi visited France from 10th to 12th of this month. During the visit, Mr Modi co-chaired the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Summit in Paris, along with French President Emmanuel Macron. They also jointly inaugurated the newest Consulate General of India in Marseille
World Record With Over 50 Crore Devotees
- Mahakumbh in Prayagraj has created history by becoming the first event in the world where more than 50 crore people are direct participants. Over 50 crore 4 lakh devotees have taken a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam so far.
- The Uttar Pradesh government said that this participation marks the largest congregation in human history for any religious, cultural, or social event.
- The UP government noted that nations like the United States of America, Russia, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, and Bangladesh all have smaller populations than those who have immersed themselves in the sacred waters at the Mahakumbh.
Ayushman Bharat Vay Vandana Scheme
- Ayushman Bharat Vay Vandana Scheme was officially launched in Puducherry today. Puducherry Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan formally inaugurated the scheme in the presence of Chief Minister N. Rangasamy and distributed insurance scheme cards to eligible senior citizens.
- The lieutenant governor urged healthcare workers to raise awareness about such schemes for senior citizens so that more people benefit. Chief Minister Rangasamy, in his address, emphasised that the scheme provides medical benefits to senior citizens.
- The central government’s Ayushman Bharat Vay Vandana Scheme provides free health insurance coverage of up to 5 lakh rupees per year for senior citizens aged 70 and above.
International Women’s Conference
- President of India, Droupadi Murmu is visiting Karnataka. The President graced the inaugural session of the 10th International Women’s Conference being organised by the Art of Living at Bengaluru.
- President Murmu said that in the present age of advancements in technology, we must ensure that our human values remain intact.
Munich Security Conference In Germany
- External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar met his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha on the sidelines of Munich Security Conference in Germany late last night. The two leaders discussed ongoing efforts towards the resolution of the Ukraine conflict.
- They also spoke on further advancement of India-Ukraine bilateral cooperation. Dr. Jaishankar also met Defence Minister of Germany Boris Pistorius. Their talks revolved around bilateral cooperation and the Ukraine development.
- The 61st Munich Security Conference (MSC) began at Munich in Germany yesterday, bringing together policymakers and experts to discuss pressing global security challenges. The External Affairs Minister also participated in the Think Tank Ananta Aspen Session at MSC 2025.
- The theme of the session was Coming of Age: Evaluating Rising India’s Security Challenges. In his first engagement at the Conference, Dr Jaishankar spoke during a panel discussion on the topic ‘Live to Vote Another Day: Fortifying Democratic Resilience.
- The External Affairs Minister expressed optimism over the direction of India’s democracy. He highlighted India as a democracy that delivers. US Vice President JD Vance called on Europe to do more to curb illegal migration, describing it as the continent’s most urgent challenge. He also urged countries in Europe to take responsibility for their own defence so that Washington could focus on threats elsewhere.
- However, Mr. Vance did not touch upon the most expected subject of peace deal talks between Ukraine and Russia. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union needed to drastically increase its defence spending and suggested relaxing the bloc’s strict debt rules as one way to make such a surge possible.
- NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the focus for European allies should be to make it clear what they can offer to ensure a possible peace deal between Russia and Ukraine lasts. Sixty heads of state and government are in attendance at the Munich Security Conference, which is regarded as the world’s most important forum for security policy.
- Key topics on the agenda include the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the crisis in Gaza, and the evolving dynamics of global security.
Historic Renaming
- Rajasthan government has renamed two significant British-era landmarks in Ajmer to honor Indian heritage. The 132-year-old Foy Sagar Lake has been renamed Varun Sagar, and the 113-year-old King Edward Memorial Bhawan has been rechristened Maharishi Dayanand Vishrant Grih.
- The renaming was confirmed by Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani, who emphasized that these changes reflect India’s journey towards erasing colonial remnants and embracing cultural pride.
- Foy Sagar Lake Renamed as Varun Sagar , Originally named after British engineer Mr. Foy. Built during the British era (1892) as a famine relief project. Now renamed after Lord Varun, the Hindu god of water.
- A statue of Lord Varun and a ghat will be constructed for prayers and spiritual activities. The lake is worshipped by many from the Sindhi community. King Edward Memorial Bhawan Renamed as Maharishi Dayanand Vishrant Grih , Originally named after King Edward VII during British rule.
- Renamed after Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati, the founder of the Arya Samaj, who attained nirvana in Ajmer. The renaming reflects efforts to replace symbols of slavery with symbols of inspiration.
