Guru Nanak Jayanti

  • Guru Nanak Jayanti, also called Gurpurab or Guru Nanak Prakash Utsav, is an important festival for Sikhs. It celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh guru, who taught unity, equality, and selfless service.
  • In 2024, this special day will be marked with great respect and joy on November 15, which will be Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s 555th birth anniversary.

  • Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on April 15, 1469, in a village called Talwandi, which is now known as Nankana Sahib in Pakistan.
  • His parents, Mehta Kalu and Mata Tripta, were from a simple Hindu Khatri background. From a young age, Guru Nanak showed deep spiritual interests and often questioned unfair practices and traditions.
  • At 30, he had a life-changing spiritual experience and shared the message, “There is no Hindu, Muslim, or Christian—humanity is one.” His teachings focused on treating everyone equally and promoting peace and understanding among people.

Birsa Munda Jayanti

  • Birsa Munda Jayanti, also known as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas or Tribal Pride Day, is celebrated on November 15th every year.
  • This day marks the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, a brave tribal leader and freedom fighter. He is remembered for leading the Ulgulan movement against British rule and fighting for the rights of tribal people in India.
  • This day, also known as National Tribal Pride Day, remembers his dedication to the rights and welfare of the tribal communities in India. It is a day to celebrate tribal heritage, culture, and the important role of tribal people in India’s history.

  • Bhagwan Birsa Munda was born on November 15, 1875, in Ulihatu, a village in Jharkhand. He grew up in a humble Munda family and faced many economic difficulties.
  • From a young age, Birsa Munda witnessed the hardships and unfair treatment faced by his people due to foreign rulers and the oppressive zamindari system. This injustice sparked a strong desire in him to fight for the rights of the tribal community.
  • Birsa Munda also started a religious movement called “Birsaait” that promoted simple and moral living. In 2021, the Indian government declared November 15 as National Tribal Pride Day to honor the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda.

First Bodoland Mohotsov

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first-ever Bodoland Mohotsov on 15th November at the SAI Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi.
  • The two-day festival, which will be held on 15th and 16th November, will celebrate the rich culture and heritage of the Bodoland region. The Prime Minister will also address the gathering during the inauguration.
  • Theme: “Peace and Harmony for Prosperous Bharat”.

  • Bodos are the single largest tribal community in Assam. They have controlled large parts of Assam in the past. The constitute the Bodo Territorial Area District (BTAD) and constitute four districts in Assam — Kokrajhar, Baksa, Udalguri and Chirang.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the Bodo Peace Accord had not just benefitted the Bodo community, but also opened avenues for many more peace accords.
  • Addressing the first Bodoland Mohotsav in New Delhi this evening, Mr Modi said, that due to peace accords, more than 10 thousand youths have given up arms and violence in Assam alone and they joined the mainstream. He said, the Central Government has given a special package of 1,500 crore rupees for the development of Bodoland.

  • A Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) was signed on 27.01.2020 with factions of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), All Bodo Students Union etc. 
  • This MoS seeks to increase the scope and power of Bodoland Territorial Council and to streamline its functioning; resolve issues related to Bodo people residing outside Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD); promote and protect Bodo’s social, cultural, linguistic and ethnic identities; provide legislative protection for the land rights of tribals; ensure quick development of tribal areas and rehabilitate members of NDFB factions.
  • MoS also provides for establishing a Bodo-Kachari Welfare Council as per existing procedure, notifying Bodo language as an associate official language in the State and to set up a separate directorate for Bodo medium schools.

1st Trilateral Power Transaction Nepal To Bangladesh

  • The first trilateral power transaction – from Nepal to Bangladesh through the Indian Grid, was inaugurated.
  • Power Minister Manohar Lal jointly inaugurated the power flow from Nepal to Bangladesh, along with the Adviser of Bangladesh Ministry of Power, Fouzul Kabir Khan, and Nepal’s Minister of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Dipak Khadka, through a virtual event.
  • External Affairs Ministry said this historic occasion marks the first trilateral power transaction which has been carried out through the Indian grid. The government announced its decision to facilitate the first trilateral power transaction from Nepal to Bangladesh, through the Indian grid with an export of up to 40 MW of power during the visit of the former Nepal Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ to India last year.

  • During the visit, both sides expressed their commitment towards greater sub-regional cooperation, including in the energy sector, which would lead to increased inter-linkages between the economies for the mutual benefit of all stakeholders.

  • Following this, a tripartite power sales agreement between NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam, Nepal Electricity Authority and Bangladesh Power Development Board was signed on 3rd October this year in Kathmandu. ​The start of this power flow from Nepal to Bangladesh through India is expected to boost sub-regional connectivity in the power sector.

Dominica To Confer Highest National Honour

  • Dominica has announced to confer its highest national honour to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Dominica Award of Honour will be bestowed to the Prime Minister in recognition of his contributions to Dominica during the COVID-19 pandemic and his dedication to strengthening the partnership between India and Dominica.
  • President of Dominica Sylvanie Burton will confer the award during the upcoming India-CARICOM Summit, scheduled to take place in Georgetown, Guyana from 19th to 21st of this month.

  • According to the statement of the Prime Minister Office of Dominica, India supplied Dominica with 70 thousand doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine during the Covid pandemic in February 2021.
  • The award also recognizes India’s support for Dominica in healthcare, education and information technology under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, as well as his role in promoting climate resilience-building initiatives and sustainable development on a global level.

  • Prime Minister of Dominica Roosevelt Skerrit said, Mr. Modi has been a true partner to Dominica, particularly during the time of need amid a global health crisis. He said, it is an honour to present him with Dominica’s highest national accolade as a symbol of country’s gratitude for his support and as a reflection of the strong ties between the two countries. He said, Dominica is looking forward to building on this partnership and advancing a shared vision of progress and resilience.

NITI Aayog’s WEP Partners With Urban Company

  • NITI Aayog’s Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP) under its award to reward initiative, launched a pilot program with urban company to support women MSMEs to scale up their businesses in the beauty and wellness sector.
  • In a statement, NITI Aayog said that the program focuses on supporting women entrepreneurs who own local salons and parlors. The Aayog said that women entrepreneurs will be offered training across six key ecosystem needs of entrepreneurial growth.

  • These are skilling, legal and compliance, access to finance, market, and business development services along with mentorship and networking.
  • Principal Economic Adviser at NITI Aayog and Mission Director of WEP Anna Roy noted that this collaboration with Urban Company is a significant step toward creating a robust ecosystem for women in the beauty and wellness sector. She said it will enable them to create more sustainable businesses

‘Know Your Medicine’ App

  • Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, has launched a nationwide call to action to strengthen the fight against doping in sports, urging athletes, coaches, and the entire sporting community to adopt the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) India’s ‘Know Your Medicine (KYM)’ app.

Baku Call Launched On Climate Action For Peace

  • COP29 Presidency today launched the Baku Call on Climate Action for Peace, Relief, and Recovery (BCCAP), an initiative addressing the urgent link between climate change, conflict, and humanitarian needs.
  • It recognizes that climate impacts, such as water scarcity, food insecurity, and displacement, can fuel conflict, particularly in vulnerable regions. The Call was introduced by Azerbaijani Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeyhun Bayramov at a high-level panel, which included ministers and envoys from various countries to develop a strategy for preventing conflict and increasing support for climate- and conflict-vulnerable nations.

  • India highlighted that the impacts of Climate Change are increasingly becoming evident in the form of frequent disasters, at the COP 29 Summit at Baku in Azerbaijan.
  • India delivered the Statement on behalf of Like-Minded Developing Countries at the High-Level Ministerial on Climate Finance at the COP29 Summit.
  • Delivering the statement, Additional Secretary, Environment Ministry, Naresh Pal Gangwar asserted that principles of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capacities must form the basis for a strong outcome on the New Collective Quantified Goal at CoP29.
  • He stated that extreme weather events are so frequent and increasingly strong, that the impacts are being felt by the people, especially of the Global South. He said there is a need for heightened ambitions on climate action. India’s intervention reiterated that the developed countries need to commit to providing and mobilise at least 1.3 trillion dollars every year till 2030, through grants, concessional finance and non-debt-inducing support that cater to the evolving needs and priorities of developing countries.
