World Ozone Day
- September 16 Is Designated As International Day For Preservation Of Ozone Layer By United Nations To Protect The Fragile Shield Of Ozone Layer, Which Protects Planet Earth From Harmful Ultraviolet Radiations From Sun.
- India Has Been Celebrating This Day Since 1995. The Theme For This Year Is “Montreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Actions”.
- World Ozone Day, commemorates the signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987, a significant international treaty aimed at phasing out the production and consumption of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS).
- India, a signatory since June 1992, has made significant strides in implementing the Montreal Protocol:
- Phase-out Success: India successfully phased out ODS like Chlorofluorocarbons, Carbon Tetrachloride, Halons, Methyl Bromide, and Methyl Chloroform for controlled uses by 1st January , 2010.
- Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) Phase-out: HCFCs are currently being phased out, with Stage-I completed from 2012 to 2016 and Stage-II in progress until the end of 2024.
- Achieving Reduction Targets: India exceeded its target, achieving a 44% reduction in HCFCs by 1st January, 2020, compared to the baseline’s 35%.
- India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP): Launched in March 2019, ICAP focuses on reducing cooling demand, transitioning to alternative refrigerants, enhancing energy efficiency, and technological advancement.
65 Years Of Doordarshan
- Doordarshan, India’s esteemed public service broadcaster, marks its 65th anniversary on September 15, 2024.
- Established on this date in 1959, Doordarshan has been a pillar of Indian media, fostering unity, culture, and education. From its modest start with experimental broadcasts in Delhi, it has grown into one of the world’s largest broadcasting organizations, adapting to technological advancements while upholding its public service mandate.
- Starting from black-and-white transmissions, Doordarshan now operates 35 channels including 6 national channels, 28 regional channels, and 1 international channel.
- This expansion reflects its commitment to regional diversity and accessibility, ensuring that every part of India is represented in its own language. To celebrate its 65th year, DD National will broadcast a special program titled “Dil Se Doordarshan, DD@65.”
‘Constitution Temples’
- Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar inaugurated ‘Constitution Temples’ at the vocational training centres in 434 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across Maharashtra in an event organised in Mumbai.
- Mr. Dhankhar said that the Constitution is the soul of democracy and Parliament is its custodian. He added that the Constitution is to be read, understood and respected.
- Mr. Dhankhar appealed that all institutions of the state need to work in tandem and togetherness to nature and blossom democratic values.
- Governor of Maharashtra CP Radhakrishnan said that our country is the most vibrant democracy in the world because of the Indian constitution.
- Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale and Minister for Skills, employment, entrepreneurship and innovation of Maharashtra Mangal Prabhat Lodha were also present at the event.
Operation CHAKRA III
- Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in its ongoing Operation CHAKRA Three, has successfully dismantled a sophisticated virtual asset and bullion-supported cybercrime network.
- CBI has arrested a person from Mumbai in connection with the case.
- According to the CBI, the accused has been targeting victims in foreign countries since 2022.
- During a search at the accused’s residential premises, 57 gold bars (100 grams each), 16 lakh rupees in cash, a mobile phone, a laptop used to manage cryptocurrencies, details of lockers, and other incriminating documents were recovered. This operation was executed in close coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the US.
- Operation Chakra-1 was a joint operation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Interpol, the FBI, and police forces from several countries to combat high-tech scams and frauds in India. The operation was conducted in October 2022
- Operation Chakra-II
- It was launched to fight against transnational organised cyber-enabled financial crimes in India.
- For this, CBI has partnered with Microsoft and Amazon as well as with national and international agencies to combat and dismantle infrastructure of illegal call centres.
- The CBI is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the USA, Cyber Crime Directorate and IFCACC of INTERPOL, the National Crime Agency (NCA) in the UK, Singapore Police Force and BKA of Germany to notify further leads
Culture As Standalone SDG
- India has reiterated the need to recognise Culture as a Standalone Sustainable Development Goal at BRICS meet in Russia’s St Petersburg.
- India has advocated for recognizing culture as a standalone goal in the post-2030 global development agenda, highlighting its transformative potential in driving economic growth, social inclusion, and sustainable development.
- While addressing the 9th BRICS Culture Ministers meeting, Secretary of Culture Ministry, Arunish Chawla has emphasized the need to place culture at the heart of global development strategies.
- He also highlighted the importance of creative industries, innovation, and job creation and the need for BRICS nations to leverage their collective cultural strengths to drive economic growth and social development.
- The 4-member Indian delegation for BRICS Culture Ministers have suggested BRICS Nations to harness the power of culture as it is the key to unlock economic growth and social inclusion.

- India has jumped to Tier 1 in the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2024, released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), when it comes to role-modeling as part of the country’s cybersecurity commitments and resulting impacts.
- Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) is a trusted reference that measures the commitment of countries to cybersecurity at a global level to raise awareness of the importance and different dimensions of the issue. National Energy Leader Award
- Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, has once again achieved excellence in energy efficiency and conservation by winning the prestigious National Energy Leader Award from the Confederation of Indian Industry – Green Business Centre (CII-GBC).
- This marks the sixth consecutive year that RINL has received this accolade, demonstrating its steadfast commitment to sustainable energy practices.
- In addition to the National Energy Leader Award, RINL also secured the “Excellent Energy Efficient Unit Award” for the eighth consecutive year.

Indian International Maritime Dispute Resolution Centre
- India has taken a major step in improving its maritime sector by launching the Indian International Maritime Dispute Resolution Centre during the 20th Maritime State Development Council meeting in Goa.
- This centre is expected to play a big role in managing the country’s maritime activities.
- Main goal of the IIMDRC is to provide a special platform for handling disputes related to the maritime industry.
- This is important because maritime activities often involve multiple countries, different types of contracts, and various forms of transport.
- IIMDRC will help resolve these disputes using fair and industry-led solutions. Along with the IIMDRC, the government also introduced the Indian Maritime Centre (IMC).
- IMC will act as a policy think tank, bringing together people and organizations involved in the maritime sector. It aims to encourage innovation, knowledge sharing, and strategic planning to boost the growth of India’s maritime industry.

- India’s rising badminton star Anmol Kharb secured her first senior international title by winning the women’s singles event at the Belgian International 2024 in Leuven.
- What makes her achievement even more extraordinary is the fact that she entered the main draw through the qualifiers and was unseeded.
Diamond League
- Ace Indian javelin throw athlete Neeraj Chopra finished in second position in Brussels with a best throw of 87.86 m at the Diamond League Final last night. Neeraj missed out on the top spot by just a 1 cm margin.
- Paris Olympics bronze medallist Anderson Peters hurled the spear to a distance of 87.87 m to claim the top position.
- Julian Weber of Germany, with his best attempt of 85.97 m, finished third. Neeraj finished as runner-up in the Diamond League for the second year in a row.
- Back in 2023, Neeraj had fallen short of defending his Diamond Trophy after losing to Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch. In that event, Neeraj had thrown 83.80m, while Vadlejch had won the title with 84.24m.
