International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

  • The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, celebrated annually on October 17th, aims to promote understanding and dialogue between people living in poverty and the wider society.
  • The theme for UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2023 is “Dignity for All in Practice.”
  • On 22 December, 1992, a resolution 47/196 was adopted by the General Assembly and declared 17 October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

Global Maritime India Summit 2023

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurate the third edition of the Global Maritime India Summit 2023 via video conferencing. The summit will be held in  Mumbai.
  • During the programme, Prime Minister will unveil ‘Amrit Kaal Vision 2047’, the long-term blueprint for the Indian maritime blue economy.
  • The blueprint outlines strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing port facilities, promoting sustainable practices, and facilitating international collaboration.
  •  Prime Minister will inaugurate, dedicate to the nation and lay the foundation stone of projects worth more than 23 thousand crore rupees, that are aligned with the ‘Amrit Kaal Vision 2047’ for the Indian maritime blue economy.
  • Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of Tuna Tekra all-weather deep draft terminal, to be built at a cost of more than four thousand 500 crore rupees at Deendayal Port Authority in Gujarat.
  • This state-of-the-art greenfield terminal will be developed in PPP mode.
  • The terminal, which is likely to emerge as an international trade hub, will handle next-gen vessels exceeding 18 thousand twenty-foot equivalent units, TEUs, and will act as a gateway for Indian trade via the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.
  • The summit is the biggest Maritime Event in the country. It will witness participation of Ministers from across the globe representing countries from Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia. The summit will also be attended by Global CEOs, Business leaders, Investors, Officials, and other stakeholders from across the world. Several Indian states will also be represented in the summit by the Ministers and other dignitaries.

GITEX GLOBAL

  • More than 250 leading Indian technology companies are gearing up to make their mark on the global stage at the GITEX Global event.
  • The five-day technology extravaganza, scheduled to take place from October 16th to 20th at the Dubai World Trade Centre, promises to unite key players from the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector worldwide.
  • This formidable presence of Indian tech companies is bolstered by a high-level ICT delegation, generously sponsored by the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC).
  • ESC, the apex organization representing exporters of IT and related products, is actively facilitating the participation of the Indian ICT industry in this grand event.
  • Highlighting the role of five dedicated pavilions representing different sectors, including TEPC, ESC, Nasscom, Kerala IT Parks, and the Government of Madhya Pradesh.
  • The participation of Indian tech firms at Gitex Global holds significant importance in light of India’s rapidly expanding startup ecosystem, which now boasts over 99,000 startups, including 108 unicorns, with a cumulative valuation exceeding $340 billion.

Cricket 4 Other Sports Included At 2028 Olympics

  • The International Olympic Committee has announced the inclusion of Twenty-20 cricket and four other sports as part of Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028. The other new entries are flag football, lacrosse, squash and baseball-softball.
  • Adding cricket to the Olympic programme would tap into the lucrative South Asian market, attracting fans in countries such as India and Pakistan.
  • Cricket last featured at the 1900 Paris Olympics, when Britain stumped France to win the Gold Medal. It remains as the only cricket match played in the Olympics so far.

Vizhinjam International Port in Kerala

  • In Kerala, the decades-long wait comes to an end, as the official reception of the first ship,  at the dream project, Vizhinjam International Port held.  
  • Vizhinjam Port India’s First Deep-water Container Transshipment Port And India’s First Automated Port At Vizhinjam In Thiruvananthapuram ,The Capital Of The State Of Kerala. The Seaport Possesses The Capability To Host World’s Most Massive Cargo Ships And Luxury Cruise Ships For Berthing.
  • The State government has made extensive preparations to receive the first ship at the Vizhinjam port, which is Kerala’s proudest project.
  • At the end of August, the cargo ship Zhen Hua 15’, which departed from Shanghai port in China, reached Vizhinjam port.
  • While Vizhinjam port is yet to be formally commissioned, Karan Adani, chief executive of Adani Ports & SEZ Ltd recently announced that is on the cards by next May, ahead of its December 2024 deadline.

B K Mohanty Director Of Finance At IREDA

  • Dr. Bijay Kumar Mohanty has recently taken up the position of Director (Finance) at the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd. (IREDA).

  • The appointment of Dr. Mohanty as Director (Finance) of IREDA has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
  • According to an official order from the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Dr. Bijay Kumar Mohanty has been appointed to this role for a duration of five years from the date he assumed the position, or until further notice, whichever comes earlier.
  • This extended commitment is expected to ensure stability and a consistent direction in the financial leadership of IREDA.

Rabindranath Tagore’s bust in Vietnam

  • In a recent diplomatic move, S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, unveiled a bust of Nobel Laureate writer and poet Rabindranath Tagore in Bac Ninh city, symbolizing the historical and cultural connections between the two countries.

APAAR Card

  • Government is planning for ‘One Nation One ID’, with respect to all schools students, of both government and private schools.
  • This unique identity will be known as Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) ID.
  • The Union Ministry of Education is planning to create ‘One Nation, One Student ID’, as part of the National Education Policy, NEP 2020.
  • An APAAR ID will be a lifelong ID number and will track students’ academic journey and achievements.
  • APAAR and National Credit Framework will be the QR Code for learners across India. Every skill they pick up will be credited here.”
  • This ID, which will be unique to each student, will track the educational progress, achievements and other particulars about specific student.

India STEM Summit 2023

  • Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said that need-based research is crucial for India to fulfill the aspirations of society.
  • Addressing the 5th edition of India STEM Summit 2023 in New Delhi, the Minister said that knowledge and innovation are the two important pillars for the growth of any nation.
  • STEM Summit pertains to integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) in the education sector that results in developing curiosity, inquisitiveness, critical-thinking, problem-solving capacities, imagination, questioning and exploration skills among learners.
  • The Minister added that knowledge and innovation are the two important aspects to make India the third-largest economy in the world.
  • India is the fastest growing economy and it is the Prime Minister’s dream to make the country a five trillion dollar economy.
  •  Mr. Gadkari said, the Government is taking a lot of steps to make India self-dependent in the energy sector.
  • He said, 36 plants are currently operational in producing Biofuels, which will help to reduce the import bill of crude oil and other petroleum products.
