Current Affairs 18 June 2025
G7 Summit
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India and Canada bilateral relations are very important and both nations have to work together to strengthen democracy as well as humanity.
- In his remarks during bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Mr Modi said many Canadian companies have investments in India and vice versa. He said he looks forward to taking India Canada relations forward.
- He added that areas like trade, energy, space, clean energy, critical minerals, and fertilisers offer immense potential for bilateral cooperation. In his remarks, Mr. Carney said that India’s regular participation in G7 Summit is testament to the importance of India and Prime Minister Modi.
- Prime Minister Modi also held a series of bilateral meetings with leaders of Germany, France, Mexico, and South Korea among others. Prime Minister Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz discussed ways to strengthen India-Germany bilateral cooperation in key areas.
- These areas include trade and investment, defence and security, green sustainable development partnership, green energy, technology, innovation, education and mobility.
- Prime Minister thanked Chancellor Merz for Germany’s strong solidarity and support to India in the fight against terrorism. In a social media post, Mr Modi said they also had discussions on deepening defence and security linkages.
- He said both nations will keep working together in areas like counter terrorism and striking down on terror financing. Mr Modi also met with President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo on the sidelines of the Summit. This was the first meeting between them.
- The Prime Minister thanked her for the support extended by Mexico in India’s fight against terrorism. Highlighting the historical bonds of friendship between India and Mexico, the two leaders agreed to work towards further expanding ties in the areas of trade, investment, start-ups, innovation, science and technology and automotive sector, and to promote people-to-people exchanges. The growing opportunities in the pharmaceutical, agricultural and holistic health sectors figured prominently in the discussions.
- Prime Minister Modi underlined that the two countries should explore collaboration in the fields of semiconductors, AI, Quantum and critical minerals. The leaders also exchanged views on pressing global and regional issues, and the priorities of the Global South.
- The Prime Minister also held a bilateral meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae-Myung. They reaffirmed their commitment to deepening India-South Korea Special Strategic Partnership by exploring new avenues for cooperation through partnerships in areas of trade and economy, critical and emerging technologies, green hydrogen, shipbuilding, and culture among others. Mr Modi also had a pull aside meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.
- They exchanged perspectives on a wide range of issues. In a social media post, Mr Modi said India and France will keep working closely for the betterment of the planet. Following conversation with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Mr Modi said in a social media post that India and UK ties are getting stronger, which is reflected in the ground covered in areas like trade and commerce.
- He asserted that India and UK will keep working together to add even more momentum to this friendship. Mr Modi said he had insightful deliberations with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. He added that India and Japan remain committed to further deepening bilateral ties across various sectors.
- Prime Minister Modi also interacted with President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on the sidelines of the G7 Outreach Summit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in its capital, Zagreb, tomorrow, which will be the First ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Croatia.
International Day Against Unilateral Coercive Measures
- UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution declaring December 4 every year as the International Day Against Unilateral Coercive Measures. The resolution passed with 116 votes in favour, 51 against, and 6 abstentions. Countries from the Global North, including the EU, Australia, Britain, Canada, Japan, and the United States, voted against it.
- It urges all states to refrain from using unilateral economic, financial, or trade measures that violate international law or the UN Charter. Such actions, it says, hinder economic and social development, especially in developing countries. The resolution aims to raise global awareness of the harmful impact of these measures.
- It also seeks to strengthen international cooperation and solidarity in addressing their consequences. The UN Secretary-General is asked to ensure the UN commemorates and promotes the day, as part of broader awareness efforts. All UN members, observers, organisations, civil society, and individuals are invited to observe the day and help spread awareness.
‘Yoga Bandhan’
- Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY), under the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India, hosts ‘Yoga Bandhan’ as a highlight of the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2025 celebrations.
- This initiative reflects India’s dedication to fostering global cooperation through institution-to-institution connections in Yoga, advancing collective well-being and cultural exchange.
- ‘Yoga Bandhan’ will unite prominent Yoga leaders from across the globe, including academicians, practitioners, authors, trainers, and studio founders, to promote people-to-people exchanges and strengthen international partnerships.
World Crocodile Day
- India commemorates 50 years of the Crocodile Conservation Project on World Crocodile Day (17th June 2025). Odisha stands out as the only Indian state with all three native crocodilian species thriving in the wild. India hosts 80% of the world’s wild gharial population, underlining its global significance in crocodilian conservation.
- Project Launched: 1975, at Bhitarkanika National Park, Odisha.
- Supported By: UNDP and FAO.
- Method Adopted: “Rear and release”—capturing eggs or hatchlings, rearing in captivity, then releasing into protected areas.
- Protected Habitats Created: Bhitarkanika National Park, Satkosia Tiger Reserve, etc.
- Species Conserved : Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) – Critically endangered.
- Mugger (Crocodylus palustris) – Vulnerable.

Uk’s Foreign Intelligence Agency
- UK’s foreign intelligence agency, MI6, will be led by a woman for the first time in its 116-year history. Blaise Metreweli, who joined the Secret Intelligence Service in 1999, will become the 18th chief of the organisation, taking over from Richard Moore later this year.
- Metreweli, who currently oversees technology and innovation at the agency, said she was proud and honoured to have been asked to lead. Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the appointment ‘historic,’ noting that it comes at a time when the work of our intelligence services has never been more vital.
Tribal Empowerment Campaign
- In a landmark step towards inclusive governance and last-mile service delivery, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) has launched the DhartiAaba Janbhagidari Abhiyan, the largest-ever tribal empowerment campaign in India. The initiative aims to saturate government benefits across 549 tribal districts, 2,900+ blocks, and 207 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG)-dominated districts, covering nearly 1 lakh villages and habitations. Union Tribal Affairs Minister Shri Jual Oram described it as a major milestone in realizing the vision of Antyodaya and Viksit Bharat.
- The DhartiAaba Janbhagidari Abhiyan, launched on June 15, 2025, marks an ambitious effort to empower tribal communities through doorstep delivery of entitlements. It aligns with the Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh celebrations and supports the implementation of PM-JANMAN and DAJGUA initiatives. The campaign, running till June 30, symbolizes a historic convergence of ministries and stakeholders working to ensure no tribal household is left behind.

Munich ISSF World Cup 2025
- India concluded its campaign at the ISSF World Cup Rifle/Pistol in Munich with a total of four medals – two gold and two bronze – securing 3rd position on the medal table behind China and Norway.
- Gold medals were won by Suruchi Singh in the women’s 10m air pistol event and the duo Arya Borse/Arjun Babuta in the 10m air rifle mixed team event.
