G20 Summit Underway In Brazil

  • Brazilian President Luiz Inancia Lula De Silva welcomes all the heads of the member states, invites and an international organization for the 1st plenary session of the 19th G20 Summit, on the “Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty”.

  • The alliance is the initiative taken under the Brazilian Presidency and will be launched. The session sees the presence of heads of the Troika members- PM Ramaphosa of South Africa, Lua De Silva of Brazil and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • Many other dignitaries like Chinese President Xi Jinping, USA President Joe Biden, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. India has taken the lead in the G20 with an impressive 7 per cent GDP growth rate projected for 2024.
  • This achievement highlights India’s robust economy, showcasing its resilience and fast-paced growth amidst global challenges. Indonesia is in the second spot with 5 per cent and China is in the third position with a growth rate of 4.8 per cent.

Gabonese Voters Approves New Constitution

  • Gabonese voters have approved of a new constitution by a landslide 91.8 per cent proposed by the country’s military rulers.
  • According to media reports, the proposed new constitution introduces a limit of two terms on the presidency, while also increasing the length of terms from five to seven years.

  • The Central African Country’s new constitution also abolishes the position of prime minister and stipulates that family members cannot succeed a president. The constitutional change will also require presidential candidates to be exclusively Gabonese, with at least one Gabon-born parent and to have a Gabonese spouse.

  • The criterion disqualifies ousted ruler Ali Bongo Ondimba, who has a French-born wife, Sylvia Valentin, and prevents his children from ever leading the country.
  • Military officers seized power in a coup in August 2023, ousting former President Ali Bongo Ondimba and putting him under house arrest.
  • Gabon’s military rulers have tentatively scheduled a handover to the civilian government for the summer of 2025.

Villages Recognised As ‘Tsunami Ready’ By UNESCO

  • In a major achievement for Odisha, 24 coastal villages from six districts have been officially recognised as ‘Tsunami Ready’ by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO.
  • This recognition was granted during the 2nd Global Tsunami Symposium in Indonesia, marking a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to improve disaster preparedness and community resilience in tsunami-prone areas.

  • The IOC-UNESCO’s ‘Tsunami Ready’ recognition includes 24 villages from the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, and Ganjam.
  • The recognition also involved the renewal of certificates for two previously recognised villages—Noliasahi (Jagatsinghpur) and Venkatraipur (Ganjam), which had already been acknowledged in 2020.
  • These villages are part of Odisha’s broader strategy to ensure preparedness for tsunami threats. Under the Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme (TRRP), the 24 villages have implemented various preparedness measures including training, community awareness campaigns, mock drills, and installation of tsunami evacuation signages and hoardings.
  • These efforts align with the 12 critical indicators of the Tsunami Ready Programme, aimed at building capacity and reducing vulnerability.

  • Odisha has 381 tsunami-prone coastal villages. The Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) plans to extend the ‘Tsunami Ready’ recognition to all of these villages in phases.
  • The initiative highlights the state’s commitment to safeguarding coastal communities from natural disasters, leveraging global frameworks like the IOC-UNESCO’s recognition and national resources like INCOIS and NDMA for effective implementation.

3rd Global Freight Summit

  • Global Freight Summit 2024 commenced in Dubai, marking its third edition since its inception in 2022. The three-day event, hosted by DP World, has attracted more than 5,000 industry leaders from 155 countries, representing diverse sectors of the global supply chain industry.
  • This year’s summit,  centres on the theme “Acting today to reach the opportunities of tomorrow.”

  • The agenda emphasizes four critical pillars: the integration of AI and blockchain in business operations, strategies for navigating volatile global markets, sustainable shipping practices, and building resilient trade routes amidst geopolitical challenges and natural disasters.
  • The event has drawn significant participation from Indian corporations, with technology giants Wipro, Tech Mahindra, and SRM Tech to name a few, along with dozens of other corporations and entrepreneurs.
  • A key focus of this year’s discussions is the implementation of practical digital solutions while addressing potential challenges in technological transition. Special attention will be given to developing innovative solutions for supply chain diversification and risk mitigation in global trade routes.

  • Brazilian Federal Police Commissioner Valdecy Urquiza has been elected as the new Secretary General of Interpol at the organization’s 92nd General Assembly, held in Glasgow, Scotland.
  • Interpol General Assembly is an annual event where member countries convene to discuss critical global policing issues.

Magnus Carlsen

  • At the Tata Steel Chess India tournament in Kolkata, World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen completed a remarkable double clinching the blitz title with a round to spare on Sunday. He made a comeback against India’s Arjun Erigaisi in the penultimate round to reach an unassailable 12 points.

  • Carlsen finished the event defeating Vidit Gujrathi in the final round to record three straight wins and end with 13 points, clinching the blitz crown. This victory marks Carlsen’s second double win in Kolkata, having previously achieved the same feat in 2019.
  • Indian players performed admirably, with Erigaisi taking third place with 10.5 points, R Praggnanandhaa finishing fourth on 9.5, and Vidit Gujrathi rounding out the top five with 9 points.

Compound Event At The GT Open In Luxembourg

  • In Archery, Reigning Asian Games champion Jyothi Surekha Vennam clinched the gold medal in the women’s compound event at the GT Open in Luxembourg.
  • Competing in the GT Open for the first time, Jyothi played brilliantly throughout the tournament and secured the title with a 147-145 win against Sarah Prieels of Belgium.

  • Meanwhile, in the men’s compound event, Abhishek bagged the silver medal. He fell just short of claiming gold despite scoring a perfect 150 in the final. His opponent, the legendary Mike Schlosser of the Netherlands, secured the top spot after a perfect shot in the final.
