BRICS Summit In Kazan
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia. The meeting assumes significance in the backdrop of the two countries arriving at an agreement on patrolling arrangements in areas along the Line of Actual Control.
- The meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President will be the first structured meeting in last five years. Mr. Modi will also address BRICS sessions.
- Mr. Modi also held bilateral talks with Presidents of Russia and Iran wherein he stressed the need for peaceful resolution of issues and said that war does not bring solutions. In his meeting with Mr. Putin, Mr. Modi asserted that India is ready to assist in bringing a peaceful resolution to the Russia – Ukraine conflict.
- Mr. Modi and Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian also met on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit and discussed the situation in West Asia.
- Modi also reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening the age-old bilateral ties with Iran. Two leaders also held discussions on key areas of cooperation including on the Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor.
India Pakistan Extend Agreement
- India and Pakistan have agreed to extend the validity of the Agreement on Sri Kartarpur Sahib Corridor for a further period of five years. The Agreement was signed on 24th of October 2019 to facilitate the visit of pilgrims from India to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur, Narowal, Pakistan through the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor and was valid for a period of five years.
- Ministry of External Affairs in a statement said that the extension of the validity of this Agreement will ensure uninterrupted operation of the Corridor for use by the pilgrims from India to visit the holy Gurdwara in Pakistan.
- In view of the continued requests of pilgrims regarding the removal of 20 dollars service charge levied by Pakistan per pilgrim per visit, India has once again urged Pakistan to not levy any fee or charges on the pilgrims.
Cyclonic Storm “Dana”
- The severe cyclonic storm ‘Dana’ is gaining strength in the Bay of Bengal and is heading towards the Odisha coast at 4 km per hour, with a landfall expected.
- ‘Dana’ is anticipated to make landfall between Bhitarkanika in Kendrapara and Bhadrak or Balasore off the Odisha coast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the depression formed over the east-central Bay of Bengal is likely to move west-northwestward and intensify into a cyclonic storm by tomorrow morning over the east-central Bay of Bengal.
International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention
- Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia launched the International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System in New Delhi.
- The Department of Communications and Telecom Services has jointly devised the system to identify and block incoming international spoofed calls from reaching Indian telecom subscribers.
- The system was made operational, and within 24 hours, about 1.35 crore incoming international calls with Indian phone numbers were identified as spoofed and blocked by telecom service providers. These spoofed calls have often been used for financial scams, impersonating government officials, and creating panic.
- There have also been cases of cybercrime threatening disconnection of mobile numbers, fake digital arrests, drugs or narcotics in couriers, impersonation of police officials, and arrests in sex rackets, among other issues.
Second White Revolution
- Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah said that India is gearing up for second white revolution aiming to connect all the 8 crore milk-producing farmers of the country to the cooperative infrastructure in coming future. Addressing the diamond jubilee celebrations of National dairy Development Board in Anand.
- Mr Shah said at present only 1.5 crore of the milk producing farmers are connected with the cooperatives while majority of them are still suffering from exploitation.
- The Minister said India’s dairy sector is growing at an annual rate of 6 percent which is above the world average. He also lauded the pivotal contribution of NDDB in the success of dairy industry and economic upliftment of milk-producing farmers.
- Mr. Shah also unveiled the plans of the BJP government to establish 2 lakh cooperative in the country in the next five years. Reiterating the commitment of the government towards the development of dairy sector, the Minister underlined several initiatives of the government like National Gokul Mission.
- The Minister also praised NDDB for the promotion of India’s cooperative milk brands at global level. During the programme, the minister also unveiled several farmer-centric projects of NDDB and also inaugurated the new campus of NDDB.
Quad Cyber Challenge
- India, the US, Australia and Japan have announced the continuation of the Quad Cyber Challenge for strengthening responsible cyber ecosystems, promoting public resources and raising cybersecurity awareness.
- Theme of this year’s Challenge is promoting cybersecurity education and building a strong workforce.” Earlier in 2023, Quad had launched a public campaign ‘Quad Cyber Challenge’ to improve cyber security across their nations. On October 10, the US hosted a Quad Cyber Challenge event at the White House joined by officials from Australia, India, and Japan, according to the US State Department press release.
Mission Basundhara 3.0
- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma officially launched Mission Basundhara 3.0 at an event held at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati. This ambitious initiative is designed to empower indigenous communities by providing them with formal land rights, ensuring greater security and recognition of their holdings.
- Aim : To provide land rights to indigenous people of Assam
- CM Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the government’s commitment to granting land rights to indigenous communities, an effort undertaken after 75 years of independence.
- He noted that Mission Basundhara was launched on October 2, 2021, with the vision of providing land rights.
- Success of Previous Missions
- Under Mission Basundhara 1.0, the state government disposed of eight lakh applications in nine months.
- The second edition, Mission Basundhara 2.0, launched in November 2022, granted land rights to over two lakh indigenous people within one year.
- Objectives
- To expedite land ownership allotment to priority groups and enhance transparency in land-related services.
- To safeguard land rights and identity for the people of Assam.
