First Session Of 18th Lok Sabha Begins

  • The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha began with newly elected MPs taking oath as members of the House. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is the leader of the Lok Sabha, was the first to take oath as a member of the House.
  • Pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab administered the oath to Mr. Modi. This was followed by the oath of the panel of chairpersons appointed to assist Mr. Mahtab in running the proceedings of the Lok Sabha till the election of the Speaker.

  • BJP MPs Radha Mohan Singh and Faggan Singh Kulaste took oaths as the members of the chairperson panel. However, Congress MP K Suresh, DMK MP TR Balu and Sudip Bandyopadhyay of TMC skipped oath-taking proceedings as the members of the panel.
  • Later, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Manohar Lal, Piyush Goyal, Jitanram Manjhi, Rajiv Ranjan alias Lallan Singh, Dr Virendra Kumar, Kiren Rijiju, Chirag Paswan, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Annapurna Devi, and others took oath as the members of the Lok Sabha.

  • Union Ministers  HD Kumaraswamy and Pralhad Joshi took oath in Kannada while Dharmendra Pradhan and  Jual Oram took oath in Odia language.
  • 18th Lok Sabha convened for the first time, a remarkable display of India’s diverse multi-lingual and ethnic traditions was witnessed in the Parliament.
  • Besides Hindi and English, several MPs took oath in regional languages, including Telugu, Assamese, Bangla, Malayalam, Gujarati, Sanskrit, Kannada, Odia, Dogri and others.
  • Some MPs were also seen wearing their traditional attire of the region. The Parliament premises also witnessed joy and excitement among the MPs as well as bonhomie between the treasury bench and opposition MPs as they were seen greeting each other.

  • INDIA bloc MPs today reached Parliament by carrying copies of the Constitution. The MPs from Congress, TMC, DMK, Left, and others assembled on Parliament House premises with copies of the Constitution. The MPs, including Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge, T. R. Balu of the DMK, and Kalyan Banerjee of the TMC, raised slogans. The MPs from the Samajwadi Party, led by party chief Akhilesh Yadav, were also seen carrying copies of the Constitution on the first day of the Parliament session.

India To Host 64th ISO Council Meeting

  • India is hosting the 64th International Sugar Organisation, ISO Council Meeting in New Delhi.
  • Delegates from more than 30 countries and representatives of many international organisations will participate in the three-day Meeting to deliberate on critical issues of the sugar and biofuel sector.

  • India is starting the series of events with an industrial tour of international delegates to one grain-based distillery at Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh to showcase India’s adoption of the latest technology in the production of biofuels and other by-products.
  • A workshop titled ‘Sugar and Biofuels – Emerging Vistas’ is also being organised at Bharat Mandapam.
  • Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, Union will inaugurate the workshop. ISO Council nominated India as the Chair of the organisation for 2024 as India is the world’s largest consumer and second-largest producer of sugar.

  • ISO has about 85 countries as members covering almost 90 percent of sugar production in the world. It is mandated to bring major sugar-producing, consuming and trading nations together to bring mutual understanding and a progressive approach in dealing with issues pertaining to the sugar sector.

‘One Week, One Theme Event’

  • Minister of State of Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh inaugurated the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) One Week, One Theme event in Delhi.

  • The event will feature week-long activities to promote the achievements of CSIR and foster collaboration. Addressing the gathering, Dr Singh said that this initiative will help acknowledge the responsible people and also enlighten the shareholders and industry about the relevant scientific developments.
  • The Minister also said that it will bring different departments together and foster innovation. The CSIR One Week, One Theme event will feature eight different themes such as aerospace, healthcare and energy amongst others.

UN Women Global Data

  • A staggering 113 countries worldwide have never had a woman serve as head of state or government, and only 26 countries are led by women.
  • According to UN Women’s Global Data on Women Political Leaders 2024, women are still largely excluded from positions of power and diplomacy.

  • The UN said, globally, women’s underrepresentation in decision-making remains a stark reality.
  • It said, only 23 per cent of ministerial positions are held by women and in 141 countries women make up less than a third of cabinet ministers as of January 1, 2024. Seven countries have no women represented in their cabinets at all.

UNESCO City Of Literature

  • UNESCO honored Kozhikode as India’s first “City of Literature” on June 23. According to this status, the city’s cultural history should be celebrated and used to help develop literary ability.

  • The Mayor of Kozhikode and the Kerala Institute of Local Administration took the lead in getting the city this title. Their thorough research and well-organized presentation brought out Kozhikode’s important contributions to many cultural areas, making Kolkata’s literary practices look weak in comparison.
  • Kozhikode has been home to numerous cultural icons including two Jnanpith laureates. The local cinema, music, and media houses have also played an essential role in developing the city’s literary and cultural environment.

  • To honor and support literary excellence in the city, six different awards will be given out every year. The Anakkulam Cultural Center is also called the “City of Literature Center.”
  • During the announcement event, prominent local figures and artists were present, and the city’s much-acclaimed writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair was honored with the Kozhikode Corporation’s diamond jubilee award, which showed the city’s commitment to its literary heroes.

Vulture Conservation Centre In Maharajganj

  • Uttar Pradesh is set to establish the world’s first conservation and breeding centre for Asian king vultures or red-headed vultures in Maharajganj.
  • The centre is named Jatayu Conservation and Breeding Centre. This is one of the 9 species of Vulture which are found in India. It is also called the Asian King vulture or Pondicherry Vulture was extensively found in India but its numbers drastically reduced after diclofenac poisoning.

  • IUCN Red List: Critically Endangered, Wildlife Protection Act, 1972: Schedule 1. The centre is named Jatayu Conservation and Breeding Centre, where 24×7 monitoring of the vultures is being done.
  • Among its staff include a scientific officer and a biologist. They (vultures) make one partner in their entire life and lay one egg in a year. Hence, their monitoring is our highest priority.

  • Asian king vultures are endangered due to the loss of their habitats and the excessive use of diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, in domestic animals, which becomes poisonous for vultures. The centre aims to ensure the good health of growing vultures and provide them with a pair.

Bajrang Punia Suspended By NADA

  • Olympic bronze medalist wrestler Bajrang Punia has been suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for a second time for refusing to provide a urine sample during selection trials.
  • This suspension comes after NADA revoked his previous suspension due to procedural issues. Punia’s legal team plans to challenge the suspension, arguing he did not refuse to provide a sample but sought clarification on expired kits used previously.

  • NADA initially suspended Bajrang Punia on April 23 for refusing to give a urine sample during selection trials in Sonepat on March 10. The global governing body for wrestling, United World Wrestling (UWW), also suspended him.
  • Punia appealed, and the Anti-Disciplinary Doping (ADDP) panel revoked the suspension on May 31, citing that NADA had not issued a formal “notice of charge.”
  • NADA served Punia with a formal notice of charge, reinstating his provisional suspension. The notice stated Punia violated Article 2.3 of the National Anti-Doping Rules, 2021, for refusing to submit a urine sample. Punia has until July 11 to request a hearing or accept the charge.

E-Medical Visa Facility for Bangladesh Nationals

  • A meeting between the two delegations in the national capital Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India will start an e-medical visa facility for Bangladeshi nationals.
  • Those who are  coming to India for medical treatment, India will open a new consulate in Rangpur, Bangladesh, to facilitate services for people in the northwest region of the country.
  • Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina is on a two-day state visit to India. PM Modi emphasized that the two leaders have met several times in the last year, adding that this visit is special because PM Sheikh Hasina is India’s first state guest during the third tenure of the NDA government.

  • PM Modi said, Bangladesh is crucial for our Neighbourhood First policy, Act East Policy, Vision SAGAR, and Indo-Pacific vision.
  • Prime Minister Modi mentioned that India and Bangladesh have started trading in Indian Rupees. He also highlighted the electricity export from Nepal to Bangladesh using the Indian grid. He added that the two countries have decided to start talks at the technical level for the renewal of the Ganga River treaty. A technical team will also travel to Bangladesh to review the protection and management of the Teesta River in Bangladesh.
  • The sixth rail link between India and Bangladesh has started between Jakhoda and Agartala.
