Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas

  • Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas is being observed. It serves as a reminder of what happened when the Constitution of India was trampled on on June 25, 1975. It is also a day to pay homage to every person who suffered due to the excesses of the Emergency. on this day in 1975, President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed issued the Emergency Proclamation under Article 352, citing threats from internal disturbance.

  • The Emergency was declared against a backdrop of mounting political unrest and judicial developments that shook the legitimacy of the ruling leadership of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
  • The executive acquired overriding powers, and state authority was brought under central control. Following the proclamation, constitutional safeguards were systematically suspended.
  • Article 358 suspended protections under Article 19, affecting freedom of speech, expression, assembly, and movement. Citizens were barred from approaching courts for redress.
  • Pre-censorship was imposed on all newspapers. Even the statutory watchdog, the Press Council of India, was abolished. Sharing his thoughts in the Mann Ki Baat programme of Akashvani, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that the Emergency was the darkest era in the country’s history when atrocities were committed on those supporting democracy.

  • Eminent Journalist Ram Bahadur Rai, who was jailed during the emergency, spoke to Akashvani and shared about the atrocities committed during the period. Constitutional Amendments during that period barred the courts from questioning the President’s decision to declare an Emergency and excluded the election of the Prime Minister and Speaker of the Lok Sabha from judicial scrutiny.

‘India’s Data Imperative’ Report

  • NITI Aayog released the third edition of its quarterly insights series, Future Front, titled India’s Data Imperative: The Pivot Towards Quality in New Delhi. The report underscores the urgent need for robust data quality to fortify digital governance, cultivate public trust, and ensure efficient service delivery.
  • It also critically examines the pervasive challenges posed by poor data quality and introduces practical, easy-to-use tools. During the release of the report, NITI Aayog CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation-MoSPI Secretary Dr. Saurabh Garg, and Distinguished Fellow, NITI Aayog, Debjani Ghosh shared their views on how India can make its data management more robust.

Seva, Sushasan, Garib Kalyan

  • External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar has said that Seva, Sushasan and Garib Kalyan are the three key pillars of governance which will lead to Viksit Bharat.

  • In his message on 13th Passport Seva Divas, Dr Jaishankar highlighted that there is a significant improvement in public service delivery, specifically in the passport issuance system in the country.
  • Minister informed that the Passport Seva Programme Version 2.0 has been rolled out across the country, which will leverage advanced, high-end emerging technologies.
  • He said the pilot testing of the Global Passport Seva Programme Version 2.0 is currently in progress and will be rolled out in a phased manner in all Indian Embassies and Consulates.
  • Dr Jaishankar informed that the launch of the Passport Police App has substantially brought down the Police Verification time to 5 to 7 days in 25 States and Union Territories.

  • Global Peace Index (GPI) 2025, now in its 19th edition, remains the world’s leading measure of national and regional peacefulness. Developed by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), the index offers invaluable insight into the peacefulness of 163 countries, covering 99.7% of the global population.

Global SDG Rankings

  • India’s sustainable development journey, the country has, for the first time, entered the top 100 in the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index, ranking 99th out of 193 nations in the 2025 edition of the UN Sustainable Development Report.

  • Published by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and led by economist Jeffrey Sachs, this is India’s highest position yet in the SDG rankings.
  • India has entered the top 100 SDG rankings for the first time, achieving a score of 67 out of 100. The 2025 SDG Index comes at a critical juncture ahead of the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4) in Seville. It reflects India’s progress in basic infrastructure, health, education, and digital access, despite global SDG slowdowns.

Ostrava Golden Spike 2025

  • Reigning javelin world champion Neeraj Chopra will be back in action at the prestigious Ostrava Golden Spike 2025 athletics meet in the Czech Republic tonight. Chopra’s event is scheduled to begin at 10:30 PM IST.

First Asia- Pacific Safety Engineering Centre

  • Google has established its first Asia-Pacific Safety Engineering Centre (GSEC) in Hyderabad, Telangana, making it the fourth such centre globally after Munich (Germany), Malaga (Spain), and Dublin (Ireland); it was inaugurated by Telangana CM A. Revanth Reddy.
