Kargil Vijay Diwas

  • Kargil Vijay Diwas is a significant day observed on 26th July each year in India. This day marks the victory of the Indian Armed Forces over Pakistan in the Kargil War of 1999.
  • The conflict, fought in the high-altitude region of Kargil, was a turning point in Indo-Pak relations and a testament to the valor and resilience of the Indian soldiers.
image 752
  • In 2024, Kargil Vijay Diwas marks the 25th anniversary of the Kargil War of 1999. The Indian Army’s ‘Operation Vijay’ successfully repelled Pakistani forces in the Kargil sector, now part of Ladakh. This significant milestone commemorates the valor and sacrifices of soldiers who defended India’s sovereignty, reinforcing national pride and honoring their enduring legacy.
  • After the Indo-Pak War of 1971 there have been many military conflicts. Both the countries have conducted nuclear tests in 1998 which have further escalated tensions. To calm the situation in February 1999, Lahore Declaration was signed by both the countries, promising to provide a peaceful and bilateral solution to the Kashmir conflict.
  • But Pakistan Armed Forces started sending its soldiers and paramilitary forces across the Line of Control (LoC) into the territory on the Indian Side and the infiltration was code named ‘Operation Badr’.
image 753
  • The main objective is to break the link between Kashmir and Ladakh and to withdraw the Indian Army from the Siachen Glacier. At the same time, Pakistan believed that creating any kind of tension in this area would help in making the Kashmir issue an international issue, helping it to secure a speedy resolution.

Ganatantra Mandap

  • Durbar Hall has been renamed as Ganatantra Mandap and Ashok Hall as Ashok Mandap of Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • According to the President’s Secretariat, continuous efforts are being made to make Rashtrapati Bhawan more accessible to people and consistent endeavour to make the ambience of the Rashtrapati Bhavan reflective of the Indian cultural values and ethos.
image 754
  • It said, Durbar Hall is the venue of important ceremonies and celebrations such as the presentation of National Awards. The term Durbar refers to courts and assemblies of Indian rulers and the British.
  • It lost relevance after India became a Republic, that is, Ganatantra. The concept of Ganatantra is deeply rooted in Indian society since ancient times, making Ganatantra Mandap an apt name for the venue.
  • The President’s Secretariat said, Ashok Hall was originally a ballroom. The word Ashok connotes someone who is free from all sufferings or is bereft of any sorrow.
  • Also, Ashoka refers to Emperor Ashok, a symbol of unity and peaceful co-existence. The National Emblem of the Republic of India is the lion capital of Ashok from Sarnath. Renaming Ashok Hall as Ashok Mandap brings uniformity in language and removes the traces of anglicisation while upholding the key values associated with the word Ashok.

What Is Agristack

  • In the 2024-25 Budget, Nirmala Sitharaman, the Finance Minister, called for a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for the agriculture sector.
  • The goal of this DPI is to connect more than six crore farmers to a formal land registry system through a project called Agristack.
  • Agristack is a digital framework that is meant to build a complete database for farmers that includes information about their identity, land records, income, loans, crop information, and insurance history.
image 761
  • It uses data from farms and information that comes from government APIs.
  • The information for Agristack will come from three main databases:
  • Farmers Registry: Gives each farmer a unique digital ID that is tied to their Aadhaar and land records.
  • Geo-referenced Village Maps: These maps show how farms look and keep track of crops through digital surveys.
  • Crop Sown Registry: This uses satellite data and remote sensing technology to make accurate maps of crops.
image 762
  • Agristack was started by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2021 based on the suggestions of a task group. Its design was spelled out in a white paper, which led to pilot projects in several states.
  • Agristack wants to make it easier to get information, cut down on unnecessary copies, and improve the accuracy of agriculture records. This unified method will help farmers plan their sales and assist the government in putting the scheme into action and keeping an eye on it.
  • e-Nam, eChoupal, and NeML are some of the applications that will be part of the framework. These will give farmers important information about the weather, market supply lines, and storage.
