Governing Council Meeting Of NITI Aayog

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the 9th Governing Council Meeting of NITI Aayog at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre, New Delhi. The theme of this year’s meeting is Viksit Bharat@2047, with a central focus on making India a developed nation.
  • The meeting will discuss the approach paper for the Vision Document on Viksit Bharat.

  • NITI Aayog said, the Governing Council meeting aims to foster participative governance and collaboration between the Centre and State Governments, enhancing the quality of life for both rural and urban populations.
  • The meeting will also see detailed deliberations on the role of states in achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat.
  • NITI Aayog said, India is on track to become the world’s third-largest economy with Gross domestic product, GDP crossing five trillion US Dollar and aspirations to reach a 30 trillion US dollar economy by 2047.
  • The Prime Minister is the Chairperson of the NITI Aayog. Other Attendees will include Chief Ministers and Lieutenant Governors of States and Union Territories, Union Ministers as Ex-officio Members and Special Invitees, and the Vice Chairman and Members of NITI Aayog.

Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre

  • India has assumed the Chair of the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC). Union Home Ministry said, ADPC is an autonomous International Organization for cooperation in and implementation of disaster risk reduction and building climate resilience in Asia and the Pacific region.

  • India and eight neighbouring countries Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand are the founding members of ADPC.
  • As a representative of the Government of India, Rajendra Singh, a Member, of the National Disaster Management Authority took over the Chair of ADPC from China for the year 2024-25 in Bangkok, Thailand
  • The Ministry said, that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is playing a global and regional leadership role in the field of Disaster Risk Reduction.
  • It said, India has taken several global initiatives in this direction, especially that of establishing an international Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.

Cultural Property Agreement

  • India and the United States of America signed a Cultural Property Agreement to repatriate stolen Indian artifacts from the USA.
  • Under the agreement, both countries will work together to also prevent and prohibit illicit trade, import, export and trafficking of archaeological and ethnological materials.
  • This is India’s first-ever Cultural Property Agreement with the US. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat termed the signing as historic and said that it will strengthen the partnership between the two nations, fostering inter-cultural growth.

  • The Minister mentioned that the agreement comes at the back of a year-long dialogue and discussion with the USA since last year’s G-20 Summit in India. He highlighted that the repatriation of illegally acquired artifacts gives communities the right to reclaim and safeguard their heritage, reaffirming their autonomy.
  • Meanwhile, the US’s ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti said that this is an important step to give India its due share with India now becoming the US’s 30th bilateral Cultural Property Agreement partner. 
  • Mr Garcetti also re-iterated the US’s commitment to strengthen its partnership with India, especially through cultural diplomacy.

First Integrated Agri Export Facility

  • India’s first Integrated Agri-Export Facility will come up at Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai to bolster the country’s agricultural export and import capabilities.

  • Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has approved the project of Development of an Export-Import cum Domestic Agricultural Commodity-Based Processing and Storage Facility on public private partnership mode worth over 284 crore rupees
  • Mr. Sonowal said, the development of this all-in-one agricultural facility will streamline logistics, reduce wastage, and provide better prices for agricultural products. He said, this is a significant step towards empowering the farmers and boosting India’s agricultural sector.
  • The facility will cater to exports of prominent items like non-basmati rice, maize, spices, onion, and wheat.

Annual BIMSTEC Security

  • National Security Advisor NSA Ajit Doval led the Indian delegation at the 4th Annual Meeting of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation BIMSTEC Security Chiefs in Naypyitaw, Myanmar. He met with the Myanmar NSA Admiral Moe Aung and BIMSTEC Security Chiefs called on Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

  • Delivering India’s national statement at the BIMSTEC meet, Mr Doval spoke on strengthening cooperation in counter-terrorism and combating drug trafficking, arms smuggling and organized crime. 
  • He also spoke about BIMSTEC connectivity, holding the 2nd Ports Conclave and water security of Himalayan river systems.

Vriksharopan Abhiyan 2024

  • Union Minister of Coal and Mines, Shri G. Kishan Reddy, launched the Vriksharopan Abhiyan 2024 at Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) in Dhanbad.
  • This initiative, part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign, was simultaneously conducted across 300 locations in 47 districts within 11 coal/lignite-bearing states.

  • On the day of VA 2024, around 1 million saplings were planted by Coal/Lignite PSUs. Over the past five years, these PSUs have planted 24 million saplings over 10,942 hectares in coalfield regions.
  • The PSUs aim to cover 15,350 hectares with green cover in the next five years, including a target of 2,600 hectares for the current fiscal year. They are employing the Miyawaki method, seed balls, and drone technology to optimize reforestation efforts and resource use.
