World Theatre Day 2026

World Theatre Day is celebrated every year on March 27 to recognize the importance of theatre as a powerful medium of expression and cultural exchange. The day highlights how stage performances influence society by spreading ideas, emotions, and awareness.

This global observance was initiated by the International Theatre Institute in 1961, and the first celebration took place in 1962 during the Theatre of Nations festival in Paris, France.

Olympics Transgender Policy for 2028

The International Olympic Committee has announced a significant policy change regarding athlete eligibility in women’s events. According to the new guidelines, transgender women and athletes with Differences of Sex Development (DSD) will not be permitted to compete in female categories at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

A key aspect of the updated policy is the introduction of a one-time SRY gene screening. The SRY gene, usually found on the Y chromosome, plays a crucial role in male biological development. Testing methods may include saliva samples, cheek swabs, or blood tests.

This decision follows years of international debate and aims to ensure fairness and safety in competitive sports. As stated by IOC President Kirsty Coventry, the move is based on scientific considerations and the need for balanced competition.

India Approves New NDC Targets (2031–2035)

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved India’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for the period 2031–2035 under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

These targets reflect India’s commitment to tackling climate change while supporting economic growth. The updated goals align with the global framework of the Paris Agreement and focus on three key areas:

  • Emission reduction
  • Transition to clean energy
  • Carbon sequestration

Major Targets

  • 47% reduction in emissions intensity of GDP
  • 60% of power capacity from non-fossil sources
  • Creation of 3.5–4 billion tonnes of carbon sink

India has already made notable progress, achieving:

  • 36% reduction in emission intensity (by 2020)
  • Over 52% non-fossil fuel power capacity (as of 2026)

Key Supporting Initiatives

  • Green Hydrogen Mission
  • PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana
  • Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Schemes
  • PM-KUSUM Scheme

India is also actively involved in global initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.

Cuba Blackout Crisis 2026

Cuba experienced another nationwide blackout in March 2026, marking the third major power failure within the same month. This situation highlights the country’s ongoing energy crisis.

The outage was confirmed by the national electricity authority, and restoration efforts are underway. However, the issue stems from long-term structural challenges rather than isolated incidents.

Key Reasons Behind the Crisis

  • Ageing and poorly maintained power plants
  • Limited domestic fuel production
  • Irregular oil imports
  • Heavy dependence on external energy sources

Many of Cuba’s power facilities are operating beyond their intended lifespan, making the system fragile and prone to collapse.
