Operation Mahadev
- Indian Army, in coordination with the CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police, launched a high-intensity counter-terrorism mission codenamed Operation Mahadev in the Dara region near Dachigam National Park, Jammu and Kashmir.
- Acting on credible intelligence inputs about terrorist movement, security forces engaged in a fierce encounter, resulting in the elimination of three Pakistani terrorists belonging to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
- The operation was initiated after intelligence inputs indicated possible movement of militants in the Lidwas area near Harwan, located about 20 km from Srinagar city. The region, known for its rugged trekking terrain, has previously been used by militants as a hideout due to its difficult topography. This anti-terror drive is also linked to ongoing efforts to track down perpetrators of the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives. Recent reports suggested that some militants involved in that attack may have shifted their base toward the Dachigam area.
- The gunfight began around 11 AM on Monday after security forces established contact with the terrorists. The Chinar Corps of the Indian Army confirmed via an official statement, “Three terrorists have been neutralised in an intense firefight. Operation continues.”
- Additional reinforcements and drone surveillance were deployed to ensure the area was fully secured.
- Security Forces Involved : The operation was a joint effort involving the, Indian Army (Chinar Corps), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Jammu & Kashmir Police
- Their coordination and rapid action prevented the militants from escaping and ensured the safety of civilians in the area.
- Significance of Operation Mahadev
- Counter-Terrorism Success: The neutralisation of three LeT militants marks a significant success in India’s continuing efforts against cross-border terrorism.
- Regional Security: The operation strengthens security in the Srinagar and Dachigam region, reducing the threat of further attacks.
- Link to Pahalgam Attack: While their direct involvement is yet to be confirmed, this operation is a step toward justice for the victims of the April 22 Pahalgam attack.
- Use of Modern Surveillance: Deployment of drones showcased the Army’s focus on technology-driven counter-insurgency operations.
Thailand, Cambodia
- In a significant breakthrough to resolve five days of deadly border clashes that have killed dozens and displaced tens of thousands of people, Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an unconditional ceasefire starting at midnight. Both sides have reached a common understanding to take steps to return to normalcy. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced this today in a press conference at Putrajaya, Malaysia in the presence of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.
- As part of the ceasefire deal, military commanders from both sides will begin to hold talks to defuse tensions while Cambodia will host a border committee meeting on 4th August. The foreign and defense ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand will develop a detailed mechanism to implement and monitor the ceasefire to ensure sustained peace.
Navigation NavIC Satellites
- Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to launch three more navigation satellites — NVS-03, NVS-04, and NVS-05 — by 2026 to strengthen India’s regional navigation system, NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation). This will enhance India’s independent navigation capabilities for both civilian and military applications.
- NavIC, earlier known as the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), is India’s autonomous regional navigation satellite system. It was developed to reduce dependence on foreign GPS systems and provide accurate navigation services across India and 1,500 km beyond its borders. The system consists of 7 satellites, supported by a network of ground stations operating round the clock.
- NavIC is a cornerstone of India’s strategic autonomy in space technology. It ensures secure navigation services for defense and disaster management while offering reliable solutions for civilian needs. By enhancing its constellation with the NVS series, India will not only improve navigation accuracy but also expand its technological leadership in the region.
- The main aim of the new launches is to augment the existing NavIC constellation with second-generation satellites. These will improve the reliability, coverage, and accuracy of the system, ensuring uninterrupted services for critical sectors such as defense, transportation, disaster management, and infrastructure.
- Key Features of NavIC
- Constellation of 7 satellites (3 in geostationary and 4 in inclined geosynchronous orbit).
- Provides Standard Positioning Service (SPS) for civilians and Restricted Service (RS) for strategic use.
- Offers location accuracy better than 20 meters and timing accuracy within 40 nanoseconds in its core area.
- Ground network includes control centres, timing facilities, and monitoring stations.
- Currently, only 4 out of 7 satellites are fully functional, making the NVS launches crucial.
- The NVS Series
- The NVS satellites (NVS-01 to NVS-05) are second-generation NavIC satellites.
- NVS-01 was launched in 2023 with an indigenous atomic clock, a first for India.
- NVS-02 was launched in January 2025.
- The upcoming NVS-03, NVS-04, and NVS-05 will incorporate the L1 band to improve compatibility with global navigation devices, making NavIC more user-friendly for smartphones and other consumer technologies.
‘Veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana’
- National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) has launched a new scheme titled ‘Veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana’ to provide comprehensive legal aid to defence personnel and their families. The announcement came during the North Zone Regional Conference held in Srinagar, on the theme “Reaffirming the Constitutional Vision of Justice for Defence Personnel and Tribals.”
- The initiative highlights NALSA’s commitment to ensuring that those who guard the nation’s borders also receive full protection of their legal and constitutional rights. The National Legal Services Authority, which has been working for 30 years to promote access to justice for all, designed this scheme to address the legal challenges faced by soldiers, ex-servicemen, and their families. The scheme was launched under the leadership of Justice Surya Kant, Supreme Court Judge and Executive Chairman of NALSA.
- Justice Kant emphasized that the initiative builds upon the existing network of legal services clinics, extending it to Sainik Boards at the Zilla, Rajya, and Kendra levels. These boards, already known for providing welfare and support, will now serve as dedicated nodal centres for guiding defence families through legal issues.
- Key Features of ‘Veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana
- Expanding Legal Aid Through Sainik Boards
- The scheme integrates legal aid services with Sainik Boards, ensuring easy accessibility for serving and retired personnel. This dedicated system allows soldiers and their families to seek timely legal guidance and assistance.
- Involving Defence Families as Paralegal Volunteers
- A unique aspect of the scheme is the active involvement of defence families and ex-servicemen as paralegal volunteers. This ensures that legal assistance comes not just from legal experts, but also from those who understand the ground realities of military life.
- Addressing Everyday Legal Challenges

Czechia’s Ondrej Kopecky, who set an all-time meet record, won the title with 8,254 points. He was followed by compatriot Vilem Strasky and Estonia’s Risto Lillemets.
Divya Deshmukh
- Divya Deshmukh became the first Indian woman to win the FIDE Women’s World Cup title after defeating fellow Indian Koneru Humpy in the final, in Batumi, Georgia.

This victory also made her the 88th person overall to reach this milestone. In addition to winning the World Cup, Divya’s performance earned her a spot in the 2026 Candidates Tournament, where players will compete for the chance to challenge the Women’s World Champion, Ju Wenjun of China.
