Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

  • Foreign ministers from Australia, India, Japan and the United States said on, they were seriously concerned about intimidating and dangerous manoeuvres in the South China Sea and pledged to bolster maritime security in the region.
  • The joint statement came after talks between the so-called ‘Quad’ countries in Tokyo, attended by Australia’s Penny Wong, India’s Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Japan’s Yoko Kamikawa and Antony Blinken from the U.S.

  • In security talks between U.S. and Japan, the two allies labelled China the “greatest strategic challenge” facing the region.
  • “We are seriously concerned about the situation in the East and South China Seas and reiterate our strong opposition to any unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo by force or coercion,” the ministers said in the statement, which did not directly mention China.
  • They also expressed serious concern about the militarization of disputed features and coercive and intimidating manoeuvres in the South China Sea, including dangerous use of coast guard and maritime militia vessels.
  • Chinese vessels have repeatedly clashed with Philippine ships seeking to resupply its troops on the disputed Second Thomas Shoal in recent months, although the two countries in July reached a provisional agreement that aims to ease tensions.

  • The Quad group said they were working on a series of initiatives to maintain “the free and open maritime order” including helping partners improve domain awareness via satellite data, training and capacity building.
  • Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QSD), commonly known as the Quad, is a strategic security dialogue between Australia, India, Japan, and the United States that is maintained by talks between member countries.
  • The dialogue was initiated in 2007 by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with the support of Australian Prime Minister John Howard, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney. The dialogue was paralleled by joint military exercises of an unprecedented scale, titled Exercise Malabar. The diplomatic and military arrangement was widely viewed as a response to increased Chinese economic and military power.

India House At Paris 2024 Olympics

  • Nita Ambani, IOC member and founder of the Reliance Foundation, inaugurated the India House during the Paris 2024 Olympics.
  • This marks India’s first-ever country house at the Olympics, highlighting a significant milestone in India’s Olympic journey.
  • In her speech, Ambani celebrated the occasion as a representation of India’s Olympic ambitions and expressed hope for India to host the Games in the future.

  • Ambani described the India House as a symbol of India’s Olympic aspirations, aiming to serve as a “home away from home” for athletes and a celebration of their achievements.
  • She underscored the potential of this initiative to be a turning point for India, reflecting on the historic Olympic flame’s journey from Athens to potentially lighting up in India.
  • The grand opening ceremony of India House, held the day after the Olympic Games’ opening ceremony, was marked by a traditional lamp-lighting ritual performed by Ambani. Key dignitaries included Ser Miang Ng (IOC Committee member), PT Usha (President, Indian Olympic Association), Jawed Ashraf (Ambassador of India to France), Jay Shah (Honorary Secretary of BCCI), and Abhinav Bindra (Olympic Gold Medallist).
  • India House, situated at Parc de la Villette in the Park of Nations. The venue offers an immersive experience with yoga sessions, cultural workshops, traditional crafts, and exclusive events such as panel discussions and celebrations of Indian athletes’ victories.
  • The opening event featured performances by Bollywood star Shaan and traditional Indian music, along with a demonstration of Mallakhamb by visually impaired children.

“Lifetime Achievement Award”

  • In a  ceremony to mark the International Meet of leading medical celebrities, professionals and Medicos from all over the country and abroad, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh was conferred the prestigious “Lifetime Achievement Award”.
  • In recognition of his exemplary dedication to the advancement of diabetology, diabetes care and diabetes research he earned acknowledgement across the country and overseas.

  • The citation further mentions that falling in the genre of the great Dr. B C Roy, Dr Jitendra Singh is another rare example of a nationally known Medical Professional, who proved equally successful in public life by being popularly elected to the House of People (Lok Sabha) for three consecutive terms with a decisive margin and also being among the few in the country and first in Jammu & Kashmir to find a berth in Union Council of Ministers consequently for the third term.
  • The citation also mentions the unique distinction conferred on Dr Jitendra Singh as the Lifetime Pattern of RSSDI (Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India), the largest academic association of Diabetologists.
  • The citation described Dr Jitendra Singh as an author of eight books and three Monograms on various aspects of Diabetes. He has written chapters on Diabetes in leading textbooks of Medicine and before becoming a Minister, he consecutively wrote a chapter on Diabetes in twelve successive editions of the prestigious “API Textbook of Medicine” published by the Association of Physicians of India. Among the Diabetes awareness books written by Dr Jitendra Singh, one of the books titled “Diabetes Made Easy” was included in the Best-seller section of the World Book Fair held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

54th International Physics Olympiad 2024

  • Indian delegation has achieved remarkable success at the 54th International Physics Olympiad 2024, in Isfahan, Iran.

  • All five Indian participants bagged medals, including 2 gold and 3 silver medals. Rhythm Kedia from Chhattisgarh and Ved Lahoti from Madhya Pradesh bagged gold medals, whereas Akarsh Raj Sahay from Maharashtra, Bhavya Tiwari from Uttar Pradesh, and Jaiveer Singh from Rajasthan were honoured with silver medals.
  • India’s delegation was led by Prof. Deepak Garg (DAV College, Chandigarh) and Dr. Shirish Pathare (HBCSE, TIFR), with Prof. A. C. Biyani (Retd., Govt. Nagarjuna Post Graduate College of Science, Raipur) and Prof. Vivek Bhide (Gogate-Jogalekar College, Ratnagiri) serving as Scientific Observers.
  • A total of 193 students from 43 countries participated in the competition. In the country-wise medal tally, India was placed in the fourth position, jointly with Vietnam. China came at the top, followed by Russia and Romania at second and third position, respectively.

‘One DAE One Subscription’

  • The inaugural ceremony of ‘One DAE One Subscription’ (ODOS) took place at Tata Memorial Hospital, in Mumbai.
  • ODOS is a unique idea enabling Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) & all its units/subunits (about 60) together under one umbrella for read and publish access to national and international research papers as well as scientific journals.
  • With this initiative it is now possible to share the resources digitally and evolve collectively.
  • DAE has signed consortium agreements with M/s. Wiley India Private Limited and with M/s. Springer Nature Group in furtherance of the same.
  • The first ODOS agreement with M/s. Wiley India Private Limited will provide access to the collection of 1353 Wiley journals including archives from 1997, to the entire DAE community. This is against the current access of 166 unique journals provided to only 12 DAE units without much increase in price. Perpetual rights will be given to all the DAE units for all the journals for the year 2024.
  • DAE will also get the right to publish more articles in open access journals. Under this agreement Article Processing Charges (APC) have been covered.

  • The second ODOS agreement with M/s. Springer Nature Group will provide access to about 2,686 Springer Nature titles which includes 553 journals as Fully Open Access (FOA). The access will be provided to entire DAE as against 1752 unique journals access provided to 14 units earlier.
  • Perpetual rights will be given to all the DAE units for all the journals for 2024.  The archives from the year 1997 for the Springer titles and from the year 2012 for Nature titles will also be accessible.
  • The agreement will also enable DAE to publish 281 articles in Springer Hybrid journals as open access without Article Processing Charges (APC). The ODOS Transformative Agreements (TA) signed with M/s. Wiley India Private Limited and with M/s. Springer Nature Group is a significant milestone for the DAE scientific community and enable sustainable growth of science and technology. This will boost scientific morale, foster innovation, promote research and will enhance academic publications.
