Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan
- Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched the ‘Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan’ from Sakhigopal in Puri district, Odisha today. The Minister said the campaign promotes two-way communication between scientists and farmers.
- He said, scientists will share research and technical insights while also gathering data on the challenges faced by farmers. Mr. Chouhan said the initiative will involve experts from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Krishi Vigyan Kendras to strengthen the ‘Lab to Land’ connection.
- He added that teams of 16,000 scientists have been formed, who will go from village to village to engage with farmers. The initiative, launched by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in collaboration with ICAR, is a concrete step toward transforming agriculture and securing the country’s food future through scientific innovation and grassroots participation.
- During the 15-day campaign, Mr. Chouhan will travel across about 20 states. State governments will play a key role in realizing this mission, and all states are expected to contribute to the campaign’s success through collective ownership and dedication.
Nagshankar Temple Of Assam
- Nagshankar Temple, located in Biswanath district in northeastern Assam, has been named a model temple for turtle conservation. This recognition was given on May 23, 2025, during a special event held on World Turtle Day. The event celebrated the temple’s important work in protecting turtles, which are deeply respected in Assam’s culture.
- The event was organized by several groups, including Kaziranga National Park, Assam State Zoo, Nagshankar Temple Committee, Chaidur College and conservation organizations like Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA) Foundation India, Aaranyak and Help Earth.
- Local MLA Padma Hazarika officially recognized the temple’s role in turtle conservation. People sang songs about turtles and released a special brochure to help the public identify different types of freshwater turtles.
- In Assam, turtles are considered sacred and are believed to be a form of Lord Vishnu. Many temple ponds in the state naturally became safe homes for turtles over time. The Nagshankar Temple is one of the best examples of this tradition.
- It is now supported by conservation experts, especially the TSA Foundation.
- The event also honoured local people called ”Kaso Mitras,” or turtle friends. These community members help protect turtles in the area. Anjali Das, president of a women’s weaver group called Kaso Sakhi, explained that turtles clean the water by eating dead and rotten things in ponds and rivers. Her group also makes handloom products with turtles designs to spread awareness.
- The temple conserves 13 species of freshwater turtles. These include:
- Black Softshell Turtle: Critically Endangered
- Assam Roofed Turtle: Critically Endangered
- Indian Softshell Turtle: Endangered
- Peacock Softshell Turtle: Endangered
- Indian Narrow-Headed Softshell Turtle: Endangered
- Spotted Pond Turtle: Endangered
- Tricarinate Hill Turtle: Endangered
- Indian Flapshell Turtle: Vulnerable
- Indian Roofed Turtle: Vulnerable
- Brown Roofed Turtle: Near Threatened
- Brown Roofed Turtle: Near Threatened

- Indian Tent Turtle: Least Concern
- Indian Black Turtle: Least Concern
Raja Kumari Makes History
- Indian-American rapper and singer-songwriter Raja Kumari has made history by becoming the first Indian-origin musician to win an American Music Award (AMA). The accolade was awarded during the 51st AMA ceremony held in Los Angeles on May 27, 2025, recognizing her contribution to the ‘Arcane League of Legends: Season 2’ soundtrack.
- The award was given in the “Favorite Soundtrack” category, where ‘Renegade (We Never Run)’, a powerful and genre-defying track, earned widespread acclaim and ultimately triumphed.
What Are Nurdles
- large quantities of tiny plastic pellets, known as nurdles, were discovered along the coast of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. This incident follows the sinking of the MSC ELSA 3, which occurred on May 25, 2025. The vessel sank carrying numerous containers, some of which contained hazardous materials. The presence of nurdles has raised alarm about marine pollution and its impact on local ecosystems.
- Nurdles are small pre-formed plastic pellets used as raw material in the production of various plastic products. Defined by the International Organisation for Standardisation, these pellets typically measure between 1 to 5 millimetres in diameter. They are primarily made of polyethene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyvinyl chloride. Nurdles are considered primary microplastics due to their intentional production in small sizes.
- Nurdles pose threats to marine life. Their small size allows them to be ingested by fish, seabirds, and other wildlife, leading to health issues such as intestinal blockages. Each year, an estimated 230,000 tonnes of nurdles are released into oceans globally. This pollution not only harms marine animals but also jeopardises coastal communities that depend on fishing and tourism.
- Nurdle spills have gained notoriety due to several incidents worldwide. Notable spills include the 2012 Hong Kong incident, where Typhoon Vicente caused widespread contamination. In 2017, a spill at Durban Port released 49 tonnes of nurdles into the Indian Ocean. Each incident resulted in severe ecological damage and brought into light the risks associated with plastic transport.
- The nurdles found in Kerala are primarily made from Low-Density Polyethene (LDPE) and High-Density Polyethene (HDPE). These plastics are widely used in everyday products. However, recycling LDPE is particularly challenging, complicating efforts to manage plastic waste effectively.
- Experts recommend several strategies for addressing nurdle pollution. Manual beach cleanups are effective but labour-intensive. Floating booms and nets can contain nurdles at spill sites. Improved packaging methods, including secure container transport and rapid response protocols, are essential for preventing future spills. Regulatory measures must also be enforced to ensure timely reporting of nurdle incidents.
- The recent nurdle discovery in Kerala puts stress on the persistent threat of plastic waste in marine ecosystems. As global plastic production continues to rise, the challenge of preventing and cleaning up spills remains critical. Environmentalists and policymakers are particularly concerned about the impact on regions rich in biodiversity, such as the southern coast of Kerala.
Mizoram Achieves Full Functional Literacy
- Mizoram has recently been declared the first state in India to achieve full functional literacy. This announcement comes 34 years after Kerala was recognised as a fully literate state. The definitions and criteria for declaring full literacy have evolved, reflecting changing educational frameworks and societal needs.
- Functional literacy refers to the ability to read and write with understanding in any language. This definition was very important when Kerala was declared fully literate in 1991. The National Literacy Mission established a benchmark of 90% literacy for such declarations. Mizoram’s declaration is based on the ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, part of the New India Literacy Programme initiated in 2022.
- The state surpassed others in literacy rates, achieving 98.4% among individuals aged five and above, according to the 2022 Periodic Labour Force Survey. Kerala was previously the most literate state with a literacy rate of 93.91% in 2011. However, by 2022, Mizoram’s literacy rate had increased , while Kerala’s rate dropped to 91.7%. This shift marks the dynamic nature of literacy achievements across states.
- The New India Literacy Programme includes foundational literacy and numeracy, critical life skills, vocational skills development, basic education, and continuing education.
- Mizoram’s focus primarily targeted the 15–35 age group, identifying non-literates through a door-to-door survey. The success of Mizoram’s literacy programme was facilitated by volunteer teachers, including students and educators. A total of 290 volunteers actively participated in teaching and learning initiatives, demonstrating community commitment to literacy.
