ASEAN, India Call For Strengthening Global Cooperation To Combat Terrorism 

  • India and ASEAN have strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms and emphasised the need to strengthen global cooperation to combat the menace in a comprehensive manner. The issue figured prominently at the ninth ASEAN-India Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crimes that took place virtually on Wednesday.
  • “Both sides strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and emphasised the need to strengthen international cooperation to combat terrorism and transnational crimes in a comprehensive and sustained manner,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
  • The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is considered one of the most influential groupings in the region, and India and several other countries including the US, China, Japan and Australia are its dialogue partners.
  • The ASEAN-India dialogue relations started with the establishment of sectoral partnership in 1992 which graduated to full dialogue partnership in December 1995 and summit-level partnership in 2002.
  • ASEAN is central to India’s Act East Policy and its vision for the wider Indo-Pacific.
  • ASEAN comprises Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Brunei, the Philippines, Singapore, Cambodia, Malaysia and Myanmar.

ISRO Planning To Launch Earth Observation Satellites, New SSLV Rocket In 2022

  • Union Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, on Wednesday, revealed that the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has readied plans to launch Earth-observation satellites to monitor the border areas and areas prone to natural disasters.
  • Dr. Singh also revealed ISRO’s plans to launch the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) in the third quarter of 2022 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. The SSLV is capable of carrying payloads weighing 55 kg to 500 km planar orbit or 300 kg to Sun-synchronous Polar Orbit.
  • According to ISRO, the SSLV is being developed to cater to the emerging global small satellite launch service market. This new class of Indian rockets is being developed by New Space India Limited (NSIL) and would prove beneficial for a gamut of reasons.

US To Send Four More Precision Rocket Systems To Ukraine

  • The United States will provide four more precision rocket systems to Ukraine to help it battle Russia’s invasion, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. His Ukrainian counterpart had asked the day before for Washington to send more M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (Himars) saying Kyiv’s forces have used them to destroy some 30 Russian command stations and ammunition depots so far.
    • Washington will send “four more Himars advanced rocket systems for a total of 16. The United States will also send additional GMLRS ammunition, which can precisely strike targets up to 80 kilometers (50 miles) away.
    • President Joe Biden’s administration has so far refused to send longer-range ammunition, fearing that Ukraine would strike targets inside Russian territory and potentially expand the war into a direct clash with the West.

F/A-18 Super Hornet built for carrier ops, ‘compliant’ with INS Vikramaditya & Vikrant

  • The F/A-18 Super Hornet’s successful completion of its trials in Goa earlier this year “reinforced” its ability to effectively and safely operate off Indian Navy carriers,” the fighter aircraft’s maker, American aviation giant Boeing, said.
  • Two U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornets had completed multiple ski-jumps, roll-in and fly-in arrestments (when an aircraft lands on a carrier and decelerates rapidly using arresting gear). They also did performance flights, in a variety of weights in the air-to-air, air-to-ground, and air-to-surface configurations, “meeting the Indian Navy test requirements”.

Next-generation upgrade

  • “The Boeing team was privileged to showcase the F/A-18 Super Hornet’s compatibility with Indian carriers in Goa,” said Alain Garcia, vice president, India business development, Boeing Defense, Space & Security and Global Services.
  • He added that the F/A-18 Super Hornet is one of the world’s most proven and affordable multi-role fighters, and continues to evolve with the development of the next-generation Block III capability, which will be game-changing for India.

  • Brig Gen Abdulla Zuhury, Director General, DIS, Maldives National Defence Force called on Lt Gen MV Suchindra Kumar DCOAS(Strat) and discussed ways to enhance defence engagements to include joint training, infrastructure & equipment support between two Armies.
  • India-Maldives Relations: Maldives is a member of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC).
