The escalating tensions on the Syrian-Lebanese border have resulted in a tragic loss of life, with the Lebanese health ministry reporting at least seven fatalities and 52 injuries following clashes that began late Sunday night. The violence erupted after accusations from Syrian authorities that Hezbollah, the Lebanese armed group, had abducted and killed three Syrian soldiers.
According to a Lebanese security source, the three soldiers were killed in the Lebanese village of Qasr by local gunmen involved in smuggling activities. In retaliation, Syrian forces reportedly fired shells into Lebanese territory, intensifying the conflict. The National News Agency of Lebanon indicated that clashes resumed Monday as the shelling continued, further complicating the already volatile situation.
The health ministry’s emergency unit confirmed that six individuals died on Monday, while a 15-year-old boy was a casualty of the violence on Sunday night. In light of these incidents, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated that the ongoing hostilities along the eastern and northeastern borders can no longer continue. He directed the Lebanese army to respond decisively to incoming fire from Syria, signaling a potentially heightened military engagement.
In line with President Aoun’s directives, the Lebanese army reported that its units had retaliated using appropriate weaponry following the renewed attacks from Syrian territory. The army is also working to reinforce its defensive positions to thwart further incursions.
A subsequent conversation between Lebanese Defense Minister Michel Mnassa and his Syrian counterpart, Marhaf Abu Qasra, led to an agreement for a ceasefire aimed at preventing further escalation of the conflict.
