Defence Acquisition Council Approves ₹67,000 Crore for Armed Forces Upgrade

In a landmark decision, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), under the leadership of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has approved a series of procurement and upgrade proposals amounting to approximately ₹67,000 crore. This initiative aims to enhance the combat readiness and technological capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces, bolstering their operational effectiveness across various domains.

For the Indian Army, the DAC has provided Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the acquisition of Thermal Imager-based Driver Night Sights specifically designed for BMP infantry combat vehicles. This advancement is set to significantly improve night-driving capabilities, thereby increasing the mobility and operational efficiency of mechanised infantry units.

Turning to the Indian Navy, the DAC has green-lit several critical projects. These include approvals for Compact Autonomous Surface Craft, which are expected to enhance the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capability by facilitating the detection, classification, and neutralisation of underwater threats. Additionally, the council approved proposals for BrahMos Fire Control Systems and Launchers, as well as upgrades to the BARAK-1 Point Defence Missile Systems, ensuring that the Navy maintains its cutting-edge technology.

In terms of aerial defense, the Indian Air Force has received notable approval for the procurement of Mountain Radars. These radars are aimed at bolstering air surveillance operations in high-altitude regions, a crucial factor given India’s diverse geographical challenges. Furthermore, the upgrade of the SAKSHAM/SPYDER Weapon System was also approved, with plans for its integration with the Integrated Air Command and Control System, thus enhancing the air defence capabilities of the service.

In a significant tri-services development, the DAC has also approved the acquisition of Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft. These advanced drones are designed for long-range, round-the-clock surveillance and strike missions, capable of carrying various payloads and weapons, further adding to the strategic depth of India’s military operations.

Moreover, the DAC has cleared proposals aimed at sustaining the Indian Air Force’s fleets of C-17 and C-130J transport aircraft, which are vital for logistics and operational readiness. A comprehensive annual maintenance contract for the S-400 Long Range Air Defence Missile System has also been sanctioned, ensuring continued effectiveness in India’s air defence strategy.

The Ministry of Defence highlighted that these approvals signify the government’s unwavering commitment to modernising the armed forces and enhancing India’s preparedness across land, sea, and air domains, reflecting a proactive approach to national security.
