Indonesia Joins BRICS Bloc as Full Member
- Indonesia has become a full member of the BRICS group, announced Brazil on. It is the largest economy and most populous nation in Southeast Asia and its entry to the BRICS bloc will further deepen the Global South cooperation.
- BRICS is an intergovernmental organisation that was founded as a counterweight to the Group of Seven, comprised of developed nations, that had ceased to serve developing countries.
- Last year, the alliance expanded to embrace Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. Turkey, Azerbaijan and Malaysia have formally applied.
- BRICS term was originally coined by Goldman Sachs economist Jim O’Neill in a 2001. The first BRIC Summit was held in Russia’s Yekaterinburg in 2009. The 16th BRICS Summit was being held under Russia’s chairmanship in Kazan in 2024.
Amit Shah, Will Launch BHARATPOL Portal
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah will launch BHARATPOL portal developed by central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in New Delhi on 07th January 2025 in Bharat Mandapam in Delhi.
- BHARATPOL portal will significantly facilitate Indian LEAs enabling real-time information sharing for faster access to international police assistance.
- The BHARATPOL portal will streamline the processing of all requests for international assistance through INTERPOL, including the issuance of Red Notices and other colour-coded INTERPOL notices.
- INTERPOL, or the International Criminal Police Organization, is the world’s largest international police organization that facilitates cooperation and crime control:

Aero India 2025
- The 15th edition of Asia’s biggest aero show – Aero India 2025 – will be held at the Air Force Station, Yelahanka in Bengaluru, Karnataka from February 10 to 14, 2025.
- With the broad theme ‘The Runway to a Billion Opportunities’, the event will provide a platform for forging partnerships between foreign & Indian firms and the discovery of newer avenues in the global value chain to accelerate the indigenisation process.
- Aero India has already carved a niche for itself globally as a premier aerospace exhibition with 14 successful editions organised since 1996 in Bengaluru.
8 Chhattisgarh Cops Among 9 killed as Maoists blow Up SUV
- A day after an encounter, Maoists blew up a police vehicle killing nine people, including eight jawans of District Reserve Guard (DRG) and a civilian driver, using an improvised explosive device weighing nearly 70 kg in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district on Monday.
- This was among the biggest strikes by Maoists on security forces in the state in past two years and 2025’s first counteroffensive.
- Naxalism or Left Wing Extremism (LWE) is one of the major challenges to India’s internal security.
- Naxal affected areas in India are known as the ‘Red Corridor’.
- Reason for Naxalism: Naxalites seek to overthrow the State through violent means.
- They openly proclaim lack of faith in the democratic means of ballot and adhere to the violence as a means of achieving their ends.
- Initial Stage: The Naxal movement started with the tribal-peasant uprising against landlords in Naxalbari village of Darjiling district, West Bengal in 1967.
- The States of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa and Bihar are considered severely affected.
- The States of West Bengal, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh are considered partially affected. The States of UP and MP are considered slightly affected.
- The CPI(Maoist) are making forays into Southern States of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and planning to link up the Western Ghats to the Eastern Ghats through these states.
- They are attempting incursions into Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, which has serious long-term strategic implications.
NSA Ajit Doval Meets US Counterpart
- India’s National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval on Monday met his US counterpart Jake Sullivan and held a high-level dialogue through extensive discussions on a broad bilateral, regional and global agenda.
- US NSA briefed the Indian side on the updates brought out by the Biden administration to US missile export control policies under the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) that will boost US commercial space cooperation with India.
- It said Sullivan’s visit gave the two sides the opportunity to review ongoing progress in high-level dialogue, including in diverse fields such as defence, cyber and maritime security.
- Sullivan’s trip comes days after External Affairs Minister Jaishankar concluded a six-day visit to the US.
- Sullivan also highlighted the benefits of the US Chips and Science Act, the India Semiconductor mission, and India’s production-linked incentive (PLI) program in reducing dependence on single-source suppliers, particularly China.
