Ordnance Factory Day 2026

Ordnance Factory Day is observed across India every year on 18 March to honour the nation’s long-standing tradition in defence production and its journey toward self-reliance. The day commemorates the establishment of India’s first ordnance factory at Cossipore, Kolkata, where production began in 1802.

This occasion highlights the critical role played by India’s defence manufacturing sector in strengthening national security. It also serves as a platform to showcase advancements in military technology and recognize the dedication of engineers, technicians, and workers who contribute to the sector.

Significance of the Day

Ordnance Factory Day plays an important role in:

  • Demonstrating indigenous defence equipment and innovations
  • Recognising the efforts of skilled personnel in defence production
  • Spreading awareness about India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing

Historical Background

India’s ordnance manufacturing system has evolved over centuries:

  • 1775 – Establishment of the Board of Ordnance at Fort William, Kolkata
  • 1787 – Gunpowder factory set up at Ishapore
  • 1802 – Production begins at Cossipore (first ordnance factory)
  • 1947 – India inherits 18 ordnance factories after independence
  • 1979 – Formation of the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB)
  • 2021 – OFB restructured into seven Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs)

Key Facts

  • Around 41 factories across India
  • Workforce of over 70,000 employees
  • Annual revenue of approximately ₹19,000 crore
  • Defence exports to 30+ countries

Successful Pinaka-ER Rocket Trials at Pokhran

India marked a significant milestone with the successful testing of 24 Pinaka Extended Range (ER) rockets at the Pokhran Field Firing Range. Conducted by Solar Group, this was the first proof trial involving production batches within the country.

The trials evaluated key performance parameters such as accuracy, consistency, and lethality. All rockets performed successfully, demonstrating high reliability under operational conditions.

Additionally, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted the maiden test of the Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR-120) in December 2025. With a range of up to 120 km, the system is compatible with existing multi-barrel rocket launchers, making it highly adaptable for modern warfare.

Lokesh Machines Secures ASMI SMG Contract

Hyderabad-based Lokesh Machines Limited has secured a ₹9.5 crore contract from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) for the supply of ASMI 9×19mm submachine guns.

The ASMI weapon, developed by DRDO, represents a major advancement in indigenous small arms manufacturing. It is designed for close-quarter combat, offering high reliability and low recoil.

This deal highlights the increasing role of private companies in India’s defence sector. It also aligns with the government’s goal of achieving higher indigenous content in defence procurement, reducing dependence on imports.

Indian Navy’s IOS SAGAR 2.0 Initiative

The Indian Navy has launched the second edition of the IOS SAGAR initiative, reinforcing India’s commitment to maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

The program includes participation from naval personnel of 16 partner nations, aiming to enhance coordination and ensure regional maritime security. It reflects India’s broader vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region).

With India assuming the chairmanship of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) in 2026, this initiative gains further importance. It supports secure sea lanes, which are vital as over 80% of India’s energy imports pass through the region.

Rising Tensions in the Gulf Region

Geopolitical tensions in West Asia have escalated, particularly involving Iran and Gulf nations. Qatar has raised concerns at the United Nations over repeated aerial threats and attacks on its territory.

The situation has intensified with warnings from the United States regarding potential retaliation if attacks on energy infrastructure continue. A major concern is the South Pars gas field, shared by Iran and Qatar, which is the world’s largest natural gas reserve.

Any disruption in this region could significantly impact global energy markets, highlighting the strategic importance of stability in the Gulf.

India Explores Sixth-Generation Fighter Jet Partnerships

India is exploring collaboration with global partners to develop sixth-generation fighter aircraft, aiming to strengthen its future air combat capabilities.

Two major European consortia are under consideration:

  • UK–Italy–Japan collaboration
  • France–Germany Future Combat Air System (FCAS)

These next-generation aircraft are expected to feature:

  • Artificial intelligence-driven combat systems
  • Advanced stealth technologies
  • Integration with unmanned aerial systems
  • Network-centric warfare capabilities

This move aligns with India’s long-term defence strategy and complements its indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. The country is also working on developing a high-thrust engine in collaboration with international partners.

Conclusion

Ordnance Factory Day 2026 not only celebrates India’s historical achievements in defence manufacturing but also reflects its rapid progress toward technological self-reliance. From advanced rocket systems and indigenous weapons to strategic naval initiatives and future fighter jet collaborations, India is steadily strengthening its position as a major defence power in the global arena.
