Indian Army Gets ‘Tank In The Air’

  • The Indian Army has announced that it has received the first batch of three AH-64E Apache attack helicopters from the United States, marking a significant enhancement to its combat capabilities. The helicopters were formally inducted on July 22, 2025, following their arrival at Hindon Air Force Station near Delhi.
  • The delivery had been delayed by over 15 months due to global supply chain disruptions and shifting geopolitical conditions.
  • These helicopters were originally scheduled to arrive between May and June 2024 under a $600 million deal signed in 2020 to acquire six Apaches for the Army.
  • The Apache squadron based in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, was established more than 15 months ago, but deployment was postponed awaiting these deliveries.
  • It carries a 30mm chain gun, Hellfire missiles, rocket pods, and Longbow radar, enabling precision strikes in day, night, and adverse weather conditions.

Indian Air Force to Phase Out MiG-21 Fighter Jets

  • The Indian Air Force will be phasing out its MiG 21 fighter jet aircraft by September 2025 and replace them with the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mark 1A.
  • First inducted in 1963, these jets will be retired after 62 years of service with the indigenously developed Tejas aircraft replacing them in all the current squadrons. The squadrons operating the MiG 21 plane are currently in Rajasthan’s Nal Air Force base.
  • The MiG 21 is India’s first ever supersonic jet, acquired as part of a deal with the erstwhile Soviet Union in 1963. The aircraft has had limited use in the 1965 Indo-Pakistan war, but was subsequently used multiple military conflicts since, including the 1999 Kargil War, 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
  • Notably, the aircraft was also used during the 2019 Balakot airstrike against terrorist camps in Pakistan. During the operation, one MiG 21 was downed, leading to the capture of Wing Commander Abhinadnan.

BSF Raises ‘Drone Squadron’

  • The BSF is raising a maiden “drone squadron” for deployment along the India-Pakistan border even as it has begun “hardening” its defences and posts against lethal UAV attacks in the wake of lessons drawn during Operation Sindoor.
  • The squadron, to be based in specific border outposts (BoPs) at this front, will comprise an assortment of reconnaissance, surveillance and attack drones or UAVs and specially-trained personnel who can operate these machines.
  • The squadron will be navigated by a control room based in the western command headquarters of the BSF in Chandigarh, the sources said. The BSF is primarily tasked to guard the India-Pakistan international border (IB).
