The Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington recently celebrated the graduation ceremony for its 80th Staff Course, marking a significant milestone as 478 officers completed their training, including 38 international officers representing 26 countries. This event underscores DSSC’s commitment to enhancing global military collaboration and fostering strong ties with friendly nations.
During the ceremony, Lieutenant General Virendra Vats, the Commandant of DSSC, delivered a motivating closing address to the graduating officers. He encouraged them to pursue continuous knowledge and become agents of change within the Armed Forces. Lt Gen Vats highlighted the importance of embracing a joint culture and ethos, values that were deeply instilled during their rigorous training at DSSC. The ceremony was held in a grand auditorium, beautifully decorated with the flags of various nations, symbolizing the spirit of international camaraderie that the program promotes.
The 80th Staff Course, which began in June 2024, continues a long-standing DSSC tradition of training mid-level officers from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, along with selected representatives from paramilitary forces, civil services, and allied international militaries. Established in 1948, DSSC has remained a key institution for military education in India. It is affiliated with Madras University for an M.Sc. in Defence and Strategic Studies and has been recognized as a research center for MPhil and PhD degrees since 1990.
Lieutenant General Virendra Vats, a highly decorated officer with extensive operational experience, leads the college with a strong background in military command. Having been commissioned into the 19 KUMAON regiment in 1988, he has held command in critical operations, including Operation RHINO in Assam and in conflict zones along the Line of Control in Kashmir. His service has garnered him multiple accolades, including the Yudh Seva Medal, Sena Medal (Distinguished), and Vishisht Seva Medal, alongside commendations from top military leaders.
The graduation ceremony recognized the exceptional contributions of graduates through the presentation of awards, with Lt Gen Vats personally handing out certificates and honors. The event attracted a significant audience, including military personnel, families, and dignitaries, underscoring DSSC’s essential role in cultivating future leaders for the Indian Armed Forces while strengthening international partnerships.
Just days before the graduation, the convocation ceremony was attended by Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, who delivered a keynote address emphasizing the government’s commitment to modernizing the armed forces while honoring their rich legacy. This reaffirmation of support from the government highlights the significance of institutions like DSSC in preparing military leaders for the complexities of modern warfare and strategic planning.
