Ecuador is significantly enhancing its cybersecurity infrastructure with assistance from the United States, adopting a proactive approach to bolster both offensive and defensive cyber capabilities in order to protect national security.
The National Computer Emergency Response Team (C-CERT) recently conducted its annual cyber defense exercise, dubbed “CIBEREC 2025.” This event brought together experts from prominent American cybersecurity firms such as Palo Alto Networks, Checkpoint, and Resecurity, highlighting the collaborative efforts aimed at improving the country’s cyber resilience.
Earlier this year, Ecuador’s Armed Forces engaged in a separate initiative known as “COCIBER 2025,” which focused on military networks and operations. This cyber-range exercise, supported by U.S. instructors, was designed to enhance the Cyber Defense Command’s ability to detect, defend against, and respond to real-world digital threats.
The drive for improved cybersecurity in Ecuador has gained increased visibility following President Daniel Noboa’s recent re-election. In preparation for the upcoming 2025 elections, Noboa has forged a “strategic alliance” with Erik Prince, the founder of the private military company Blackwater, aiming to address organized crime issues within the country.
During a recent announcement, Noboa emphasized the importance of this partnership in combating narco-terrorism and protecting marine resources from illegal fishing activities. He stated, “Organized crime has sown fear and believes it can operate with impunity. Their time is running out. International aid is beginning to flow to Ecuador.”
The collaboration with Resecurity, a California-based cybersecurity and intelligence firm, underscores Ecuador’s commitment to enhancing various facets of its cyber strategy. Resecurity specializes in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) solutions for law enforcement and governmental entities, and its expertise in Dark Web intelligence and drug trafficking is expected to significantly bolster Ecuador’s security efforts.
By aligning with Resecurity, Ecuador aims to strengthen critical areas such as cyber intelligence, leadership protection, critical infrastructure defense, and electoral security. This multifaceted approach is intended to better equip the nation to counter digital threats and mitigate foreign interference as it continues to navigate the complexities of modern security challenges.
