Portugal Receives First Batch of A-29N Super Tucano Aircraft from Embraer

The Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer is advancing its A-29 Super Tucano by integrating counter-drone capabilities into the aircraft’s existing features. This strategic upgrade enhances the aircraft’s versatility in addressing unmanned aerial threats in a cost-effective manner.

The modified A-29 will incorporate advanced systems alongside its existing capabilities. These enhancements include datalinks designed to receive initial target information and the installation of a sophisticated electro-optical/infra-red sensor aimed at facilitating laser tracking and designation. To further augment its defensive prowess, the aircraft will also feature laser-guided rockets and wing-mounted .50-caliber machine guns, specifically designed for engaging unmanned aerial systems.

The upgraded A-29 empowers current and future operators to conduct counter-drone missions seamlessly, aligning with modern warfare’s necessary adaptations. Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, emphasized the urgent need for effective solutions to combat drones, particularly in light of ongoing global conflicts.

The A-29 Super Tucano is renowned for its versatility, capable of executing a range of missions, including advanced pilot training, close air support, air patrol, and Joint Terminal Attack Controller training. It also engages in intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance missions, and border surveillance operations. Designed for rugged operational environments, the aircraft can take off from unimproved runways and forward bases.

Operating at a maximum speed of 320 knots (593 kilometers per hour), the A-29 maintains a cruise speed of 280 knots (518 kilometers per hour). With its three external fuel tanks, it can achieve an operational range of 1,550 nautical miles (approximately 2,870 kilometers), while its endurance can exceed three hours on internal fuel or extend beyond five hours when equipped with two external tanks.

With over 600,000 flight hours logged globally, the A-29 is a trusted asset among 22 air forces. Its capabilities have recently been bolstered by Paraguay’s addition of the aircraft to its military fleet, while the United States has authorized a potential $100-million sale of the A-29 to Lebanon, indicating growing international interest in this upgraded platform.
