Lieutenant General Sadhna Saxena Nair Retires After 39 Years of Distinguished Service

Lieutenant General Sadhna Saxena Nair has officially retired from the Indian Army, capping a remarkable 39-year career that saw her become a pioneering force in military medical services. Her retirement was commemorated in a formal farewell ceremony held at the Army Medical Corps Centre and College in Lucknow, where she was honored by senior officials, including Lieutenant General Shivinder Singh, as well as personnel from the corps.

Joining the Indian Army in December 1985, Lieutenant General Nair rose through the ranks to achieve significant milestones in her career. Her most noteworthy accomplishment was her appointment as the Director General Medical Services (Army) on August 1, 2024, making history as the first woman to occupy this crucial position. Prior to that, she also made history as the first woman Director General Hospital Services (Armed Forces), where she served in the rank of Air Marshal.

During her farewell address at a Special Sainik Sammelan, Lt Gen Nair underscored the critical importance of upholding the highest standards of medical care and professionalism within the Army Medical Corps. Her leadership as Senior Colonel Commandant was characterized by significant advancements in healthcare services for military personnel, showcasing her commitment to those serving the nation.

Her exemplary service has not gone unnoticed; she was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2025, in addition to earlier receiving the Vishisht Seva Medal in recognition of her outstanding contributions. Throughout her career, Lt Gen Nair has served as an inspiration, particularly for women aiming to serve in the armed forces, as she has broken barriers and set a legacy of excellence.

The Indian Army and the Army Medical Corps have expressed their heartfelt gratitude for her unmatched contributions, wishing her success in her future ventures. While her retirement signifies the conclusion of a noteworthy chapter, her legacy will undoubtedly continue to motivate future generations of medical professionals serving in the military.

Stepping into the role of Director General of Medical Services (Army) will be Lt Gen CG Muralidharan, who has taken over after Lt Gen Nair’s retirement on September 30, 2025, following over four decades of dedicated service to the nation.
