French Army Contracts Soframe for Heavy Recovery Vehicles to Boost Battlefield Support

In a strategic move to bolster its battlefield support capabilities, the French Army has awarded a contract to Soframe for the supply of Heavy Recovery Vehicles. This contract emerges from a competitive process initiated in the spring of 2025, driven by the increasing demand for modern recovery platforms within its combat units.

These specialized military trucks are designed to assist in the recovery of damaged or immobilized equipment, thereby enhancing operational resilience. By enabling quicker retrieval and reactivation of vehicles, the French Army aims to maintain momentum during rapid operations, a critical factor in contemporary combat scenarios.

As part of the framework agreement, Soframe will commence with an initial delivery of 20 Heavy Recovery Vehicles, with five vehicles expected to arrive by 2027. The contract provides the French Army with the option to acquire up to an additional 80 platforms, allowing for fleet expansion in response to evolving operational requirements.

Highlighting an emphasis on international collaboration, the vehicles are based on the 8×8 Protected Recovery Vehicle design that is already in use by the Belgian Armed Forces. This collaborative approach underscores the growing defense cooperation and interoperability between France and Belgium. The initiative also engages several European industrial partners, including Jigé International, FN Herstal, and Daimler Trucks, which signifies a broader multinational effort in defense manufacturing.

The specifications for Soframe’s Heavy Recovery Vehicle are noteworthy. The vehicle is expected to measure approximately 10 meters (33 feet) in length and may feature a protective chassis resilient to mines, ballistic threats, and improvised explosive devices. Equipped with an automatic transmission and a robust 476-horsepower engine, the vehicle can achieve a maximum speed of 90 kilometers (56 miles) per hour, along with an operational range of 800 kilometers (497 miles).

Designed for a crew of three, the platform will also include a main winch and a self-recovery winch, featuring cable lengths ranging from 60 to 80 meters (197 to 262 feet). Additionally, it boasts an underlift capacity capable of handling between 10 to 14 tons (22,046 to 30,865 pounds), further affirming its utility in diverse recovery scenarios on the battlefield.
