German Company Quantum Systems to Supply Spain with 91 Drones for Armed Forces

German tech company Quantum Systems has reached a significant agreement to supply the Spanish Armed Forces with mid-range reconnaissance drones, marking an important step in enhancing Spain’s military capabilities. As part of this framework agreement, Madrid will receive a total of 91 Vector unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The overall intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) package is set to include 182 drones, aimed at boosting the endurance, reliability, and operational flexibility of the Spanish forces.

The initial deployment of these Vector drones will be managed under the Spanish Army and the Spanish Marine Infantry, while additional capabilities will be provided to the Spanish Air Force through the acquisition of several Twister UAVs. These units are specifically designed to enhance short-range reconnaissance capabilities for dynamic and rapidly changing missions. The delivery of both the Vector and Twister drones is scheduled to commence later this year.

The Vector drone is an innovative electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft characterized by its open architecture. This design allows for easy upgrades and the expansion of its functionality to adapt to various mission requirements. With a command and control range exceeding 38.2 miles (60 kilometers), the Vector boasts a flight endurance of up to 35 minutes and can support a maximum take-off weight of 18 pounds (8 kilograms). It has established a presence among operators in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, and Ukraine, the latter of which received enhanced sensor systems last year to conduct operations in environments where Global Navigation Satellite System signals are inaccessible.

On the other hand, the Twister UAV is equipped with electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors, providing real-time situational awareness for its operators. Its eVTOL capabilities facilitate covert launches from hidden locations and confined spaces. This drone is also capable of receiving over-the-air software updates, ensuring it remains equipped with the latest operational technology and capabilities.

Through this partnership, Quantum Systems aims to fortify the Spanish military’s reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities, providing them with advanced tools for modern warfare scenarios.
