Germany Orders Additional 30mm Ammunition for Puma Infantry Fighting Vehicles

Germany has made a significant move to bolster its military capabilities by placing a substantial order with Rheinmetall for 30mm ammunition intended for the Puma infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs). This recent acquisition is valued at several hundred million euros and is part of an overarching framework agreement that was established in December 2022. This agreement specifically involves the supply of 30mm×173 ammunition tailored for the Puma IFVs.

The newly expanded contract, which is set to extend through 2029, not only increases the quantity of ammunition to be supplied but also enhances the overall financial commitment tied to the deal. While a portion of the ammunition has already been delivered under this updated arrangement, Rheinmetall is poised to deliver several hundred thousand additional rounds, with the estimated total value of the contract reaching around 1 billion euros (approximately $1.1 billion).

The Puma IFV is armed with Rheinmetall’s MK30-2/ABM 30mm cannon, which is compatible with programmable ammunition. This advanced weaponry boasts an effective engagement range exceeding 2,000 meters (over 6,500 feet). The capabilities of the vehicle are further enhanced by Rheinmetall’s KE-TF round, specifically designed for targeting soft and semi-hardened threats, including drones.

This procurement is part of Germany’s broader initiative to strengthen its Puma fleet. Earlier this month, Berlin awarded a substantial contract worth 4.2 billion euros ($4.9 billion) to a joint venture between Rheinmetall and KNDS Deutschland for the acquisition of an additional 200 Puma IFVs. Deliveries from this contract are scheduled to commence in mid-2028 and will include the integration of the MELLS anti-tank guided missile system, enhancing the operational versatility of the fleet.

In addition to new procurements, last year Germany approved the implementation of a state-of-the-art modular training simulator developed by Rheinmetall specifically for Puma crews. This system, known as AGSP, is designed to simulate realistic live-fire and combat scenarios, thereby providing crews with valuable training. The simulator features a command-and-control station along with four vehicle cabins designed to reflect the internal layout of the Puma, ensuring that personnel are well-prepared for actual deployment scenarios.
