German defense contractor Rheinmetall has secured a significant contract to supply advanced Skyranger 35 air defense systems to Ukraine. These systems will be mounted on the chassis of the Leopard 1 main battle tank and represent a crucial addition to Ukraine’s air defense capabilities amid ongoing regional tensions.
The deal, valued at several million euros, is financed by an undisclosed European Union member state, utilizing funds from frozen Russian assets. This strategic move underscores the ongoing efforts of EU nations to support Ukraine in defending itself against external threats.
The production and system integration of the Skyranger 35 will take place at Rheinmetall Italia’s facility in Rome. While specific details regarding the contract are sparse, the implications for Ukraine’s defense are clear. Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger expressed gratitude for the trust Ukraine has placed in the company, highlighting the collaboration with the EU member state which reflects a commitment to bolster Ukraine’s defense infrastructure.
The Skyranger 35 is a mobile variant of the Skyshield air defense system, featuring a KDG 35/1000 revolver cannon capable of firing at an impressive rate of 1,000 rounds per minute with 35 × 228mm caliber ammunition. This modular system harnesses the robust mobility and protection of the Leopard 1 platform while delivering superior firepower and precision for air defense needs.
With an effective operational range of up to 4,000 meters (13,123 feet), the Skyranger 35 is designed to counter various aerial threats, including the loitering munitions that Ukraine has increasingly faced. The system’s capability to fire shells in airburst mode is particularly noteworthy, as it detonates near the target and releases a cloud of tungsten sub-projectiles, enhancing hit probability against agile aerial adversaries.
Moreover, the Skyranger 35 can function autonomously or be integrated into larger air defense networks, ensuring robust protection for both stationary and mobile assets.
