Germany’s Ship-Mounted Laser Weapon Blasts Past 100 Live Shots, Targets 2029 Rollout

Rheinmetall and MBDA have made significant progress in the development of a high-energy shipboard laser weapon system for the German Navy. Following an extensive year-long trial phase conducted at sea, the advanced weapon system is now closer to being operational.

The trials were carried out on the F124 Sachsen-class frigate, where the laser weapon underwent over 100 live-firing tests under genuine maritime conditions. These tests were crucial in assessing the weapon’s reaction speed and effectiveness, particularly in countering drone threats. The outcomes of these tests indicate that the system is capable of delivering precise strikes in dynamic environments, demonstrating a higher level of reliability.

Additionally, the trial confirmed that the laser weapon could maintain its accuracy using an integrated targeting suite. This capability is particularly notable as it negates the need for any surrounding terrain to absorb stray laser beams, enhancing the weapon’s operational flexibility in various combat scenarios.

With these promising results, the German Navy is one step closer to potential deployment, with plans for a full rollout anticipated as early as 2029. The advancements in laser weapon technology signal a shift in naval defense capabilities, with an emphasis on innovative solutions to counter aerial threats effectively. As defense technology progresses, this system may set a precedent for future naval arms development both in Germany and globally.
