What Is the Global Terrorism Index(GTI)

The Institute for Economics and Peace publishes the Global Terrorism Index each year. Because even the definition of terrorism is debatable, it is critical to emphasize that the methodologies used to measure terrorism are also debatable. The Global Terrorism Index ranks 163 countries based on four indicators that are weighted over a five-year period. These four factors are the number of terrorist incidents per year, the number of terrorist fatalities per year, the number of terrorist injuries per year, and the total property damage caused by terrorism per year.

India: Key findings of the Global Terrorism Index (GTI)

  • India was ranked 13th among countries with a “high” impact of terrorism.
  • India was one of the 25 worst terror-hit countries, and one of 56 of the 120 nations polled, with no respondents citing war and terror as the greatest threat to their daily safety.

South Asia was discovered to have the lowest GTI score

Another unchanging trend revealed that South Asia continues to have the lowest average GTI score. The region recorded 1,354 terrorism deaths in 2022, a 30% decrease from the previous year; however, if the improvement in Afghanistan was excluded, terrorism deaths would have increased by 71%. Pakistan experienced a significant increase in terror-related deaths, with a 120% increase over the previous year. Afghanistan and Pakistan remain among the ten countries most affected by terrorism in 2022, with deaths in Pakistan increasing by 120% to 643, up from 292 in 2021.
