Group Captain Ravi Nanda is the captain of the Indian Air Force C-130J Special Operations aircraft which carried out the daring operation to rescue 121 Indian nationals from a small airstrip in Wadi Sayidna near Khartoum, Sudan during the ongoing conflict.

Nanda was also involved in the rescue operations in Kabul, where he and his crew freed Indian officials and civilians from Kabul airport during the Taliban’s takeover of that country. Group Captain Ravi Nanda was awarded the Vayu Sena Medal for gallantry in rescuing Indians from Afghanistan in August 2021 as part of Operation Devi Shakti. On all such missions, the IAF special operations aircraft fly alongside a team of Garud Special Forces.
Conflicts between the army and paramilitary forces have resulted in bloodshed in Sudan. Despite a 72-hour cease-fire, there have been reports of violence. Soldiers loyal to Sudanese army head Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy, paramilitary Rapid Support Soldiers commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, have clashed. India has deployed military planes and vessels in the war-torn country to ensure that no Indian national is left behind.
