Gunmen Kill 17 Farmers in Northwestern Nigeria During Raids

In a tragic incident in northwestern Nigeria, gunmen ambushed farmers in Goron Namaye village, Maradun district, resulting in the deaths of 17 individuals on Friday. This assault is part of an ongoing cycle of violence targeting agriculturalists as the farming season commences, raising serious concerns about food security in the region.

Local officials and residents reported that armed assailants, riding motorbikes and disguising themselves as visitors, opened fire on the farmers engaged in their work. In addition to the fatalities, five others sustained injuries, with three of them in critical condition. Sanusi Dosara, the political administrator of Maradun district, confirmed the casualties and lamented the increasing frequency of such attacks aimed at destabilizing farming activities.

Community leader Abubakar Jarra expressed indignation over the violence, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures to protect farmers. “We buried 17 people who were killed in the attack,” Jarra said, calling for immediate action from the authorities to shield agricultural workers from these relentless aggressions.

Eyewitness reports suggest that the attackers may have targeted the village as retaliation for the killing of 13 bandits by local vigilantes during a recent raid. This pattern of violence aggravates the existing tensions in the area, leading to widespread abandonment of farmland across northern Nigeria.

As the country enters its critical rainy season, the impact of these attacks is felt deeply in agricultural communities, with many farmers feeling forced to flee their fields, jeopardizing the food supply of Nigeria, the most populous nation in Africa. In a striking example of the ongoing insecurity, 39 elders from the same district were abducted the previous Sunday while attempting to negotiate for safer farming conditions.

The dire situation has attracted international attention, with the International Monetary Fund warning that the rampant violence could severely affect Nigeria’s fiscal health and agricultural output, exacerbating poverty and food shortages across the region. As communities are torn apart by fear and insecurity, the future of farming in this vital area hangs in the balance.
