21-Year-Old Fake Brigadier Caught in Army Cantonment

A young man from Shahjahanpur, identified as Aryan Verma, was apprehended on Friday for allegedly impersonating a Brigadier in the Indian Army. This unusual case has sparked significant concerns regarding the misuse of military identity. The arrest occurred during a sting operation at the Shaheed Sangrahalaya, or Martyrs’ Museum, located within the Shahjahanpur Cantonment area.

Reports indicate that Aryan, 21, had been operating in and around the city in a private Tata Harrier SUV adorned with a Brigadier’s one-star plate and the Army Headquarters flag. He reportedly employed two bouncers, whom he claimed were National Security Guard (NSG) commandos, all while portraying himself as a serving senior officer of the Army.

The accused hails from Durga Enclave Colony in Roza, Shahjahanpur, but had been residing in Delhi while preparing for competitive exams. After failing the NEET examination on two occasions, he shifted his focus to pursuing a career in the military. In January 2026, he informed his family and neighbors that he had been appointed as a Brigadier in the “RN Brigade,” stationed at the Command Hospital in Chandigarh. Following this claim, he began to don the ceremonial uniform of a Brigadier and interacted with locals under the guise of authority.

Suspicion around Aryan’s claims escalated when two ex-servicemen, Satish Singh Chauhan and Sudesh Mishra, began to doubt the credentials of a man so young holding a senior military rank. Their concerns deepened as they noted his unusual demeanor, especially traveling with private security personnel and displaying military insignia on a civilian vehicle.

The veterans contacted Aryan and invited him to the Shaheed Sangrahalaya under the pretense of counseling aspiring young recruits. They also informed Colonel Bharat Singh, the Station Commander, about their suspicions. Following reports received by Army authorities, a plan was put into place to apprehend him.

On the morning of the operation, Aryan arrived at the venue in full Brigadier’s uniform, accompanied by his bouncers and traveling in the SUV with military markings. He was promptly detained by military personnel.

During the operation, several questionable items were seized from Aryan, including:

– A fake government identity card
– An identity card with the alleged seal of the Dean, Armed Forces Medical College, suspected to be forged
– An Army regimental cane
– A fake pistol

An Army Intelligence team from Bareilly has taken charge of the preliminary investigation. They are currently interrogating Aryan to ascertain the motivation behind the impersonation, the origins of the forged documents and uniform, and whether he acted independently or had accomplices.

The Superintendent of Police in Shahjahanpur, Saurabh Dixit, confirmed the detention of Aryan Verma. He noted that Army authorities are conducting their own interrogation, and once this is concluded, custody will be transferred to the police, at which point a formal FIR will be registered under the appropriate legal sections.

Aryan comes from a family with professional backgrounds; his father, Anil Verma, serves as a Horticulture Inspector, while his mother, Manoja Devi, is a teacher within the Basic Education Department.

This troubling incident underscores the pressing need for vigilance against the misuse of military identities and symbols. Such acts not only tarnish the reputation of the armed forces but also pose risks by misleading the public and exploiting the respect that military personnel command. Further developments in this ongoing investigation are anticipated.
