DRDO Showcases India’s Next-Generation Defence Technologies
India has taken another major step towards strengthening its defence preparedness as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully demonstrated several advanced military technologies. These achievements highlight the country’s growing capability to counter emerging threats and reinforce its position as a technologically advanced defence power.
Successful Demonstration of Multi-Layered Missile Defence
On 10 and 11 June 2026, DRDO conducted three consecutive flight tests aimed at validating India’s advanced missile defence architecture. The trials successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of a multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system designed to intercept and destroy hostile ballistic missiles at different stages of flight.
The interceptor missiles accurately engaged their designated targets, proving the reliability of the system against long-range missile threats. Developed using cutting-edge technologies, the BMD network significantly enhances India’s ability to defend strategic assets and population centres from missile attacks.
With these successful tests, India has joined a select group of nations possessing advanced BMD capabilities capable of engaging even Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM)-class threats. Alongside the BMD trials, DRDO also successfully carried out the maiden flight test of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Medium Range (NASM-MR), further strengthening India’s maritime strike capabilities.
Advanced Weapon System Complex Inaugurated in Hyderabad
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the Advanced Weapon System Complex at the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), located within the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex, on 12 June 2026.
During the inauguration, he emphasized that indigenous systems such as the Akash Missile System and BrahMos Missile have demonstrated India’s ability to compete globally in defence technology. He highlighted that national security depends upon strength, and self-reliance remains the strongest pillar supporting that strength.
The Defence Minister also referred to Mission Sudarshan Chakra, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 2025 Independence Day address. The initiative aims to establish a comprehensive multi-layer missile defence shield capable of protecting military installations, critical infrastructure, and civilian assets.
Project Kusha: India’s Long-Range Air Defence Programme
Another important initiative under development is Project Kusha, an indigenous long-range air defence system designed to strengthen India’s air and missile defence network.
The project includes interceptor missiles with engagement ranges of approximately 150 km, 250 km, and 400 km. Once operational, the system will become a key component of India’s integrated air defence architecture and significantly improve protection against aerial threats.
NETRA AEW&C System Nears Final Operational Clearance
DRDO’s indigenous NETRA Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system is set to achieve Final Operational Clearance (FOC) on 25 June 2026. The certification marks the completion of more than twenty years of development, testing, and operational validation.
The FOC confirms that the aircraft has met all combat readiness requirements and possesses the full range of mission capabilities necessary for operational deployment. Developed by the Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) in Bengaluru, NETRA serves as a vital airborne surveillance and command platform.
The Indian Air Force currently operates three NETRA Mk-1 aircraft based on the Embraer ERJ-145 platform. Since their induction, the aircraft have supported several important military operations, including the Balakot air strikes, the India-China border standoff, and Operation Sindoor.
The upcoming NETRA Mk-2 variant is expected to offer detection ranges exceeding 500 kilometres, enhanced situational awareness, and improved endurance, bringing India’s capabilities closer to those of leading global air forces.
Dharashakti Electronic Warfare System Approved
The Defence Acquisition Council has approved the induction of the indigenous Dharashakti Integrated Electronic Warfare System worth approximately ₹5,150 crore.
The system is designed to detect, intercept, jam, and neutralize a wide range of enemy electronic assets, including airborne early warning systems, fighter aircraft radars, surveillance radars, communication networks, and navigation systems.
One of its most significant capabilities is the ability to disrupt enemy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) at distances of up to 150 kilometres. This capability will greatly strengthen India’s electronic warfare and spectrum dominance on future battlefields.
The system integrates communication and non-communication warfare modules, enabling secure battlefield communications while simultaneously degrading enemy surveillance and targeting capabilities.
India’s First Commercial Aircraft Assembly Line at Dholera
In another significant development for India’s aerospace sector, Adani Defence & Aerospace and Embraer have announced plans to establish a Final Assembly Line (FAL) for the E175 regional jet at Dholera Special Investment Region.
The project will create India’s first dedicated commercial aircraft assembly facility and is expected to generate thousands of skilled jobs. It will also support the country’s efforts toward aviation self-reliance under regional connectivity initiatives.
The E175 regional jet, a member of Embraer’s successful E-Jet family, is an 88-seat aircraft designed for short-haul operations. Its efficiency, reliability, and suitability for challenging operating conditions make it an attractive option for India’s expanding regional aviation market.
