Indigenous Xtreme Weather Grade Diesel

  • General Dhiraj Seth, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), today launched the indigenously developed Xtreme Weather Grade (XWG) Diesel in New Delhi.
  • Developed jointly by the Indian Army and Oil Marketing Companies, the specialised fuel will enhance the mobility, safety and operational availability of combat and logistics vehicles in extreme climatic conditions.
  • The technology also has wider civilian use in high-altitude and severe winter regions and represents a significant step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat.
  • Conventional diesel can thicken and clog fuel filters at very low temperatures, affecting the operation of vehicles in high-altitude and snow-bound areas. XWG Diesel overcomes this challenge and remains effective at temperatures as low as minus 42 degrees Celsius.
  • Compliant with BS-VI standards and IS 1460:2025 specifications, it can be used in the Indian Army’s existing vehicle fleet without any engine modification or re-homologation.

Bhawana Kanth Becomes India’s First Woman Fighter Combat Leader

  • Indian Air Force Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth has achieved another milestone by becoming the first Indian woman pilot to successfully complete the Fighter Combat Leader (FCL) course. She completed the advanced training programme on 6 August 2026 at the Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment (TACDE), Gwalior.
  • The FCL course is a highly specialised 20-week programme designed for selected IAF fighter pilots. It focuses on advanced air-combat tactics, leadership and the ability to command complex frontline missions. The course has a highly selective completion rate, with only around one percent of selected pilots reportedly completing it successfully.
  • Bhawana Kanth was commissioned into the Indian Air Force in June 2016 as part of the country’s first batch of women fighter pilots. The batch also included Avani Chaturvedi and Mohana Singh. In 2019, Kanth became the first Indian woman fighter pilot to qualify for daytime combat missions.

PM Modi Inaugurates Param Pragya Supercomputing Facility

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Param Pragya, an AI-enabled high-performance computing facility, at the Sonipat Campus of IIT Delhi on 8 August 2026. The inauguration took place during the 57th Convocation Ceremony of IIT Delhi.
  • Param Pragya has been designed to support areas such as artificial intelligence, data science, advanced computing and interdisciplinary research. High-performance computing systems allow researchers to process huge volumes of information and perform complex calculations at very high speeds.
  • The inauguration was part of a major academic event at IIT Delhi, where more than 3,000 students graduated. The institute also awarded degrees to 587 doctoral scholars.

  • The vessel was launched by Mrs Manika Sadhu in the presence of Vice Admiral Sanjay Sadhu, Controller of Warship Production & Acquisition. Senior representatives of the Indian Navy, Ministry of Defence and GRSE attended the ceremony.

Mumbai Start-Up Develops Indigenous Joule-Thomson Cooler for Missile Seekers

  • A Mumbai-based defence start-up, Techno Defence Pvt Ltd, has developed an indigenous Joule-Thomson (JT) Cooler used in missile seeker systems. The technology represents an important development because such systems have historically been controlled by a limited number of technologically advanced countries.
  • The development was supported by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • What Is a Joule-Thomson Cooler?
  • A JT Cooler is a compact cooling device used to rapidly reduce the temperature of certain sensors.
  • In missile systems using infrared-guided seekers, sensors and focal-plane arrays need to be cooled to extremely low temperatures to operate effectively.
  • The device developed by Techno Defence can cool infrared sensors to approximately –196°C. It is described as miniature, lightweight and vibration-free.
  • How Was the Technology Developed?
  • The project originated from an interaction between IIT-Bombay alumnus Dr Pravin Salinkar and a DRDO laboratory director around 2017–18.
  • Dr Salinkar subsequently co-founded Techno Defence with fellow IIT-Bombay alumnus Sudarshan Saraf. The company assembled a small team of engineers and technicians to work on the technology.
  • In 2020, the company received funding under the DRDO Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme to design and develop the JT Cooler.
  • The company also collaborated with DRDO’s Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL) and Research Centre Imarat (RCI).

Government Advances ‘PRAHAAR’ Counter-Terrorism Strategy

Pakistan’s First Lunar Rover Named ‘Jinnah-1’

  • Pakistan has named its first-ever lunar rover ‘Jinnah-1’. The rover has been named by SUPARCO (Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission) and is planned to travel to the Moon aboard China’s Chang’e-8 mission in 2029.
  • The rover is intended to operate in the Moon’s south polar region. SUPARCO, Pakistan’s national space agency, was established in 1961 and works in areas including satellite development, space science and remote sensing.
  • The name Jinnah-1 honours Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who founded Pakistan in 1947. The name was selected through a nationwide public competition that received more than 4,000 submissions.

India Optel Launches Indigenous ‘GARUD’ Binoculars

  • India Optel Limited (IOL) has launched ‘GARUD’ High Resolution Binoculars for the civilian market. IOL is a Mini Ratna Category-I Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Department of Defence Production.
  • The binoculars have been developed and manufactured by Ordnance Factory, Dehradun, an IOL unit. The product reflects India’s focus on indigenous design and manufacturing under Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

  • India’s nuclear programme follows a three-stage approach, involving Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), Fast Breeder Reactors (FBRs), and thorium-based systems.
  • PHWRs use natural uranium as fuel and heavy water as moderator and coolant, while SMRs are compact reactors designed for smaller unit sizes and modular deployment.
  • The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is India’s principal nuclear research institution, while BHAVINI is responsible for fast breeder reactor projects.

Joint Military Exercise Maitree-XV

  • The Indian Army contingent departed for Thailand to participate in the 15th edition of the India-Thailand Joint Military Exercise MAITREE-XV (2026).
  • The exercise will be conducted from 18 to 31 August 2026 at Vibhavadi Rangsit Camp, Surat Thani, Thailand. Last edition of the same exercise was conducted at Foreign Training Node, Umroi, Meghalaya in September 2025.
  • The Indian Army and Royal Thai Army contingents comprise 85 personnel each. The Indian Army contingent is represented primarily by troops from 9 Gorkha Rifles, while the Royal Thai Army contingent comprises personnel from the 3rd Battalion, 25th Infantry Brigade, 5th Division.
  • The exercise will involve company-level joint training focused on operations in jungle and semi-urban terrain.
  • Aim of Exercise MAITREE is to foster Military Cooperation between India and Thailand. The Exercise will enhance combined capabilities in executing Joint Counter Insurgency/ Terrorist Operations in Jungle and semi-urban Environment under Chapter VII of United Nations Charter.

MoD inks Contract With General Atomics Aeronautical Systems

  • Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) for the leasing of two MQ-9B Sea Guardian High-Altitude Long-Endurance (HALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) for the Indian Navy for a period of 30 months.
  • The contract is valued at approximately Rs 1,943 crore. It was signed in the presence of Additional Secretary & Director General (Acquisition), Department of Defence, Shri A. Anbarasu, at Kartavya Bhawan-2, New Delhi on August 17, 2026.
  • The MQ-9B Sea Guardian HALE RPAS, equipped with advanced systems, state-of-the-art sensors and sophisticated payloads, will significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s Maritime Domain Awareness capabilities.

Australia Agrees To Supply Uranium To Bharat

  • Australia has agreed to sell uranium to India, ending a long stalemate that had persisted for more than a decade. The move marks a significant shift in Canberra’s non‑proliferation stance and comes at a time when India’s power demand is rising rapidly.
  • India, with a population of 1.4 billion and a rapidly expanding middle class, has set an ambitious target of installing 100 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity by 2047.
  • This would be sufficient to power nearly 60 million homes annually. Although India has doubled its nuclear power capacity in the past decade, nuclear energy still accounts for only 3 percent of its electricity generation.
  • India is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non‑Proliferation Treaty, which recognises only five nuclear weapon states. New Delhi has long argued that the treaty is discriminatory, as it permanently excludes countries that tested nuclear devices after January 1967. Following its nuclear tests in 1998, India faced international sanctions and bans on uranium trade.
  • India is currently Australia’s fifth‑largest trading partner, with two‑way trade in goods and services valued at 54.4 billion Australian dollars ($37.7 billion) in the 2024‑25 financial year.

  • Built with more than 65 per cent indigenous content, ICGS Ajit reflects the growing capabilities of India’s domestic defence shipbuilding industry and the Government’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
  • The 51.43-metre-long and 8-metre-wide vessel has a displacement of 330 tonnes at a draught of 2.5 metres. It is powered by twin marine diesel engines driving controllable pitch propellers (CPP), a first-of-its-kind feature in this class of Fast Patrol Vessels, providing improved propulsion efficiency and operational performance.
  • With a top speed of more than 27 knots and an endurance of 1,500 nautical miles, the vessel is equipped with an advanced integrated machinery control system to enhance operational readiness, efficiency and sustainability.
  • ICGS Ajit will be operated by a crew of 6 officers and 35 sailors. The vessel has been designed to undertake a range of critical maritime security missions, including fisheries protection, Exclusive Economic Zone surveillance, coastal patrolling, anti-smuggling and anti-piracy operations, as well as search and rescue missions.

  • On 24 August 2026, the United States announced “Operation Economic Outcast”, a sanctions campaign led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent against Iran.
  • The measures expanded U.S. sanctions coverage to five sectors of the Iranian economy and targeted 60 individuals, entities, and vessels linked to cyber operations, oil sales, and procurement networks.
  • Operation Economic Outcast is a U.S. economic and diplomatic pressure campaign directed at Iran. The United States Department of the Treasury used the campaign to widen restrictions on digital assets and cryptocurrency, weapons-related technology, gold, airlines, and shipping.

NSG Launches First All-Women Commando Course

  • The National Security Guard (NSG) Training Academy launched India’s first-ever Mahila Commando Conversion Course (MCCC) on 24 August 2026 at its garrison in Manesar, Haryana.
  • The 12-week residential programme is designed for selected women personnel from State Police Forces and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and includes counter-terrorism training, weapons handling, marksmanship, tactical intervention, and hostage rescue drills.The National Security Guard is a federal counter-terrorism force under the MHA. It was raised in 1984 after Operation Blue Star and the assassination of PM Indira Gandhi, and it functions as a specialised force for anti-hijacking, counter-terror operations, and high-risk security duties.
  • The Mahila Commando Conversion Course is a 12-week intensive residential training programme. It is structured to build advanced operational skills in female personnel drawn from police and paramilitary formations.
  • The course began on 24 August 2026 at the NSG Training Academy in Manesar.

HAL and Safran Sign Aravalli Helicopter Engine Contract

  • HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines signed a final contract in Bengaluru on 26 August 2026 to develop and produce a new high-power turboshaft engine for 13-tonne helicopters. The agreement was signed through SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd. (SAFHAL), a joint venture between HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines.
  • The new engine has been named Aravalli after the Indian mountain range. It is designed for the 3,500 to 4,000 shaft horsepower power class, which places it in the high-power segment of helicopter propulsion systems. The contract covers design, development, manufacture, supply, and lifecycle support of the engine.
  • The Aravalli engine has been selected for HAL’s planned Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and its naval variant, the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH). The IMRH is a 13-tonne class helicopter programme, and the DBMRH is intended for shipborne operations in the Indian Navy.
  • HAL has stated that the programme may support civil aviation uses such as offshore transport, utility missions, and VVIP transport. The programme also includes plans to develop domestic Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul capabilities for the engine family.

India, US sign Rs 292 crore deal for buying Javelin missiles

  • India and the United States have signed a Rs 292 crore deal to buy around 60 Javelin anti-tank guided missiles for the Indian Army under the emergency procurement powers.
  • The procurement has been done under the Emergency Procurement powers granted to the defence forces to build their capabilities post Operation Sindoor last year, Defence sources told.
  • The contracts under the (EP-6) are expected to start being delivered to the armed forces by the end of 2026-27.
  • The missile is being procured by the Indian Army in limited numbers only, as the Emergency procurement powers allow them to make purchases only up to Rs 300 crore per equipment.
  • The American side has been pushing for the sale of these missiles to India under a government-to-government deal. India is also developing its own man-portable anti-tank guided missile and has done multiple trials of the system, which is still under development.
