Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has marked a significant achievement with the successful maiden flight of the first series production HTT-40 Basic Trainer Aircraft, designated TH-4001. This event represents a pivotal step in India’s quest for self-reliance in defence aviation.

The flight took place at HAL’s Bengaluru facility and highlights the transition of the HTT-40 program from prototype development to operational production. This indigenously designed and developed aircraft aims to enhance the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) primary pilot training fleet, succeeding aging trainers currently in service.

The HTT-40 is powered by a Honeywell TPE331-12B turboprop engine and features modern avionics, advanced safety systems, and fully aerobatic capability. With an indigenous content level of 56%, which is projected to exceed 60%, the aircraft exemplifies the “Make in India” initiative within the aerospace sector.

The IAF has placed an initial order for 70 HTT-40 aircraft, amounting to ₹6,838 crore. HAL is expected to deliver the first unit by January 2026, with an additional 11 units scheduled for March 2026. Production of the aircraft will take place across HAL’s facilities in Bengaluru and Nashik, with a newly inaugurated production line in Nashik capable of producing eight aircraft annually.

Since 2013, the HTT-40 has been developed through HAL’s internal funding and has amassed over 900 flight-test hours. It complies fully with US FAR-23 certification standards and is equipped for instrument and night flying, enabling it to meet international benchmarks for pilot training.

This milestone follows the recent inauguration of new production lines for both the Tejas Mk-1A and HTT-40 at HAL Nashik, which not only broadens India’s defence manufacturing capabilities but also creates new jobs.

With the HTT-40 now entering the production phase, it is set to become the cornerstone of India’s basic flying training program, enhancing HAL’s stature as a key player in the country’s indigenous defence aerospace landscape.
