In a significant strategic move, Hanwha Aerospace has entered into a collaboration with BAE Systems to enhance its Chunmoo rocket artillery munitions by integrating advanced anti-jamming GPS technology. This partnership is primarily aimed at bolstering the resilience of the Chunmoo system against electronic warfare threats, which have proven to be a critical challenge for GPS-guided projectiles, notably highlighted in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The integration of this enhanced anti-jamming capability is expected to substantially improve the precision and operational reliability of the munitions. This advancement will not only increase the effectiveness of the Chunmoo system but also enhance its attractiveness to prospective customers in Europe and allied nations. Hanwha’s Chunmoo multiple launch rocket system is versatile, utilizing both guided and unguided munitions, while BAE Systems brings a wealth of expertise in military-grade anti-jamming GPS solutions, having developed technologies such as NavStrike-M and the Digital GPS Anti-jam Receiver.
Billy Boowhan Lee, Head of the Precision Guided Munitions (PGM) Business Group at Hanwha Aerospace, emphasized the goal of this collaboration, stating that it seeks to secure cutting-edge electronic warfare protection technology to safeguard guided weapon systems. He expressed a vision for bolstering Hanwha’s position in the global market by leveraging a technological edge against electronic warfare threats.
This partnership comes on the heels of another significant development: Hanwha Aerospace has recently signed an agreement with Poland’s WB Group to produce CGR-80 guided missiles within Poland. These missiles, designed for use with the Homar-K multiple rocket launcher system—which is a licensed adaptation of the Chunmoo—are expected to have a range of 80 kilometers (about 50 miles). Poland is set to be the primary market for these guided missiles, with possibilities for exports extending to other European countries as well.
Additionally, Hanwha has joined forces with Swedish defense company Saab to investigate the potential integration of its Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb into the Chunmoo system. This collaboration aims to further enhance the global market appeal of the multiple rocket launcher, continuing Hanwha Aerospace’s expansion and innovation within the defense sector.
As these developments unfold, Hanwha Aerospace is positioning itself as a pivotal player in the advanced artillery and defense technology markets, aiming to meet the evolving demands of modern warfare.
