Hanwha Aerospace Signs Agreement with GE Aerospace for Engine Kits for South Korea’s Fighter Aircraft and Helicopters

Hanwha Aerospace has entered into a significant agreement with GE Aerospace to procure new engine kits designated for South Korea’s indigenous fighter aircraft and helicopters, as reported by local media outlets.

Per the terms of the agreement, Hanwha will acquire 40 F404 engine kits tailored for the FA-50 Golden Eagle, along with its variants, the TA-50 and T-50. Additionally, the deal includes the purchase of 88 T700 engine kits designed for the KUH-1 Surion helicopter.

GE Aerospace will be responsible for the manufacture of the engine components, while Hanwha will take on the assembly and testing of these parts. Once completed, the assembled packages will be sent to Korea Aerospace Industries, the developer of the FA-50 and KUH-1, for installation.

The F404 engine, renowned for its reliability and ease of maintenance, has amassed over 13 million flight hours across the globe. It is widely deployed in light fighters and trainer jets, notably the F/A-18 Hornet and India’s Tejas, along with the FA-50 series. The T700 engine, on the other hand, boasts more than 100 million flight hours worldwide and serves as the powerplant for numerous military helicopters, including the UH-60 Black Hawk and AH-64 Apache.

This partnership signifies a broader cooperation between Hanwha and GE Aerospace, rooted in a long-standing collaboration spanning decades. The two companies have jointly worked on engine programs for locally built aircraft, contributing to South Korea’s efforts to lessen its reliance on foreign suppliers.

“GE Aerospace remains committed to supporting Korea’s indigenous military aircraft programs…with our proven and advanced engines,” stated Rita Flaherty, Vice President of GE Aerospace Defense & Systems, as reported by Business Korea.

Sun Kim, President of Hanwha Aerospace’s Engine Business Group, emphasized that this latest agreement strengthens the ongoing partnership with GE Aerospace. He noted that it allows both companies to play a pivotal role in enhancing Korea’s defense capabilities and competitive edge in the industry.
