Hanwha Defense USA and UNION Technologies Form Strategic Partnership for 155mm Munitions Production

In a significant move to bolster the United States defense manufacturing sector, Hanwha Defense USA (HDUSA) has announced a strategic partnership with UNION Technologies, a Texas-based company. The collaboration aims to enhance the production capacity of 155-millimeter munitions, crucial for the U.S. military and its allies, while also reinforcing the defense industrial base and establishing more resilient supply chains.

The partnership will initially concentrate on the production of 155-millimeter shell metal components, essential for various artillery systems. Both companies will work together through a designated joint working group responsible for overseeing technical integration, ensuring quality assurance, and establishing near-term production priorities.

Hanwha Defense USA, a subsidiary of the South Korean defense giant Hanwha Group, is recognized for its extensive experience in defense-related manufacturing. This includes the development of advanced components, artillery systems, and energetic materials. On the other hand, UNION Technologies specializes in the creation of automated, software-defined factories aimed at scaling manufacturing processes while ensuring high levels of traceability and consistency.

Garrett Unclebach, CEO of UNION, emphasized that the partnership is designed to maintain production output in response to evolving defense needs. He noted, “Winning the production race requires factories that are modern by design: automated, traceable, and governed by real-time data.” According to Unclebach, UNION’s cutting-edge manufacturing systems will enable rapid capacity expansion without compromising on mission standards.

Jeff Janey, Executive Vice President of Munitions at HDUSA, echoed these sentiments, indicating that the collaboration aligns with the broader goals set by Washington to increase domestic ammunition production capacity. “HDUSA is committed to strengthening the defense manufacturing base and expanding capacity where it matters most,” said Janey. He continued, “This partnership brings together UNION’s modern factory model and HDUSA’s defense industrial experience to support quality, scalability, and resilient production pathways for 155mm.”

This strategic alliance not only stands to benefit the production of essential military munitions but also signifies a commitment to enhancing the overall resilience and efficiency of the United States’ defense manufacturing capabilities.
