Hezbollah’s leadership has issued a stern warning following the recent assassination of its high-ranking military commander, Haytham Ali Tabtabai, in a strike that took place in Beirut’s southern suburbs. Speaking during a televised address, Deputy Secretary-General Naim Qassem described the attack as “a blatant aggression and a heinous crime,” asserting the group’s entitlement to retaliate. He emphasized, “We will determine the timing for that,” indicating a strategic approach to their response.
Qassem highlighted that the Iran-backed organization has adhered to a ceasefire established in November 2024, which aimed to halt over a year of hostilities with Israel. However, he criticized Israel for its ongoing military actions against Lebanon, insisting that these attacks must cease. Qassem posed a rhetorical question about the potential for future warfare, acknowledging, “It’s possible at some point, yes, that possibility exists,” thus reflecting increasing anxiety among the Lebanese populace regarding a potential resurgence of broader conflict.
Despite the rising tensions, Qassem suggested that a major escalation might still be averted, noting, “Israel is weighing its options, and America is weighing its options as well.” This comment points to the geopolitical considerations influencing the overt military strategies of both Israel and Hezbollah.
Details surrounding Tabtabai’s assassination reveal that he was engaged in discussions with four aides to strategize for upcoming actions when the attack occurred. His death marks a significant loss for Hezbollah, making him the most senior commander to be targeted by Israel since the truce, which has seen continuous strikes aimed at members of the group under the pretext of preventing rearmament.
Following the assassination, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps called for “revenge,” indicating that the incident has sparked outrage and could have implications for regional stability. As Hezbollah assesses its options for retaliation, the situation remains fraught with potential volatility, warranting close attention from international observers.
